That first image is my fine collection of dorky mugs I've been drinking out of.
My dear sweet Marian just made me the one in the middle, the ESWAT mug after I was freaking out seeing a picture of one from deepest darkest asia. I'm so thrilled.

She even changed this mug so it says ESWAT (EXTRA special weapons and tactics) instead of just SWAT.

I wonder if Olympus has a regular SWAT team that has to put up with ESWAT
lording it's E over them. It's like that fat cunt, "Best friend bear" who
showed up years after our man Friend bear like "do something!"

I like this classy Tintin mug set. I wonder why they picked images of all
the characters stressed out?

and manga moocha.
I like that Takahasi just goes nuts when she colors lums hair.
Like --this time it's rainbow.

This weeks been good.
I've been doing a side job working on Mr Kevin Hanna's Clockwork girl movie.
Here's a couple of my storyboard drawings from the thing:

Me and my pal Claire have done rough boards for the almost the first
3rd of the movie and this week Marian and mr Moritat are going to be working on boards with us. --and Barnaby Ward
is doing the designs for the movie. It should be cool.

And I just bullied Stokoe out of some of his ORC STAIN 3 pages.
He's doing such cool shit. The upcoming issues get so fucking good.

And while I'm at it, here's some pages from my next King city 8-
It's nice to finnaly have the new ish coming out.

I got some comics this week.
AP was the first company to publish me when I was 19 (October yen was my first book).
I was all about that company but stopped reading too much of their stuff
after Gold digger went color and Twilight X stopped coming out.

I got this new Fred perry book, Ihavent read it yet but the art looks
like he put the time into it. And the back cover has this ad for a
new book drawn by Joe Wight of Twilight X-- I think he's one of the best
dudes at storytelling on this comic book continent.
I hope he draws the whole thing.

And I got some old 98 Heavy Metal issues.
This one had this Di Marino and De Vicentiis Kashka comic in it.
It reads like if Aeon flux was done for Image in the 90's.

Here's some pages from a maximum security Ice prison where
all the inmates wear shortshort onesies withthongs underneath.
If not for porn I would tottaly assume that the thong was an invention
of 90's image.

and here's a scene watching an cyborg alien dog fight.
I thought it was funny that the lady here has just escaped from the ice prison and this is her laying low outfit-- hella subtle dawg.

And a pencil drawing from De Vincentiis. I thought was.... cool.

The other HM story in these that I liked was this one by garces.
The whole thing is 4 pages and it's just a guy going into an
anti stress relax pod petting a cat and hanging out with a lowkey dude.
I like a comic about nothing.

And I got these NBM translations of the french Wind in the Willow Adaptions for Marian--

I haven't read them but the art is insane.

And I saw that Marvel finally announced the Manara X men to come out in
about 4 months. "Nobody been this long awaited since Jesus."

Also I saw that Manara did a story off of Jean-Claude Forest's Barbarella comic for Pilote magazine.

And here's a Manara redrawn Barbarella panel.-- When I was a kid I had a fat history
of comics that I would read over and over and that was the barbarella
panel in it. such a layed back robot- " Madame-my movements are too mechanical"

And here's another panel from Manaras take on Asterix.

I like the idea of getting a big enough name to just draw a bunch of tribute comics based off of stuff you love. That should be my plan and then I'll spend my
later years on nothing but Conan, Dirty pair and Gardens of Aedena--maybe a crossover...

And here's a cover of Manaras Paper man book that I hadn't seen before.

And I dug up these 80's japanese girls toys--I love this shit.
little houses inside of trees and apples.
I like the one eared rabbit and the star haired kid.--
i feel like that guy is what my pal Corey Lewis would draw if he was
a japanese girl in the 80s.

And the boys version of the same thing seems to be these robodatchi dudes.
i like that motorcycle dude. VVNNNNNNNNNN!

And someone asked where this drawing on the right came from.
I grabbed it off this ad.

And some manga covers I thought were cool.

And some covers by the Cyber 7 dude.

and oh shit I almost made it through this without some 80's dirty pair!
I like how Yuri looks in this.

Also I should mention that I did an audio interview with my old pal
Mike Turney for his Action room show.

And a new Newarama I did with Mr Chris Arrant:

I think that's it. Tomorrow I'm going into work again on the movie
like a real grown up adult.

I've been kiking around the idea of bullying a couple of my nearest and derest into recording some audio shit talking about comics. hmmmmmm

I'll leave you with some faith no more.

Current Mood: late
Current Music: faith no more dude

If possible, I'd like the apple house to be an anti stress pod for the motorcycle robot.

Looking forward to new King City mate. Stokoe's stuff is NICE too!

I never thought I would like gradients as much as I do now thanks to Stokoe's work. I also want to commend both of you guys for not printing either of your books on that horrible glossy paper that is everywhere in comics now. I actually can't remember the last time I saw a book printed in color that didn't look like it was on glossy Kinkos paper.

I've also found it amusing to see how King City almost has two different styles thanks to it being in limbo for so long between volumes. It gives the illusion that your style evolved immediately (like some sort of Pokemon) when it was, in actuality, gradual. (like... real life animals I suppose.)

That slick paper is pretty awful.
Yeah, Stokoe and Tom Herpich have both changed my outlook on gradients.

I still barely use them in my own stuff--but my appriciation is through the roof.

HA...that pirate volcano totally made me lose my shit!

Been semi-obsessing about Laser Beasts/Battle Beasts here lately...they had a lot of little playsets like those, too.

Joe Wight's a cool dude. Cantankerous in equal amounts to patient.

I do love a battle beast as well.
Were they like Transformers tie ins origonally?

Im so into Wights stuff---I used to call him when I was a teenager. he was verry nice.
and yes Cantankerous.

brandon! thank you SO MUCH for opening KC 7 with a shout-out to my favorite scene in Enter the Dragon. No shit, I drew that scene on a friend's bedroom wall when I was a teen, it stayed there until they moved out of the place.

"Don't concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory." That is a good scene to draw on a wall.

I put that in teh comic after a friend of mine did that to me. It's a fine trick n real life too.

whoa- that 7Bridge cover is bananas!

Also, those new KC pages look rad. Especially that floating street corner. And that tasteful sky gradient.

Funny they played Epic on the radio yesterday...

BTW I love your pal Stokoe's lettering. He must be really fast if he can do the whole comic by himself and he doesn't cheat either.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: April 12th, 2010 05:20 pm (UTC) (Link)
He does do some mean lettering.
looking at it makes me look forward to hand lettering all my stuff again.

Those apple houses remind me of the little underground sections in Super Mario Advance, with these huge rotating lemon slices:

Something about the robodatchi stuff reminded me of your work.
I'm all about that Mario/ Dr slump 80's steeze.
I need to play the game again with the Tanooki suit.

Where's the "I'm a gentleman" mug from?

Double whammy of King City today, #6 and #7, as I hadn't been to the comic shop in a while. Plus Orc Stain #2! Brilliance!

The storyboards look great. Have you had any specific storyboard training, or do you just find that your comics skills translate over pretty well?

I remember those treehouse/apple/mushroom toys being advertised back in the 80's so they made it over to Britain at least.

What's going on with that doll on that 7 Bridge cover? It's like an evil Bert.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: April 13th, 2010 09:32 am (UTC) (Link)
The gentelman mug is something Marians sister brought be back from deepest darkest asia. On top of its hat it says "8 times a day" --I have no idea what that means.

Thanks for getting the comics.

And thanks-- the storyboards are going ok this time. I'd done a couple storyboarding jobs in my 20's and I was awful at them, I'm still pretty rusty at the non comics aspects.

And yes that does look like an evil Bert. Its a stuffed version of one of the 7 dimention jumping hero robots from the comic. Even the girl looks a little creepier than normal on that cover.

Con Job

"And I saw that Marvel finally announced the Manara X men to come out in
about 4 months. "Nobody been this long awaited since Jesus.""

Right around SDCC, I was a little surprised to see that Manara is going to be there this year.

I was walking out of the room when the mug image was reloading and in my mind's eye, the one on the right, "creativi-tea", for a split second looked like a boobie with "creativi-titty" written on it...
From: derekkirkkim Date: April 12th, 2010 05:41 pm (UTC) (Link)
I love the juxtaposition of Wind in the Willows and Manara.
