The big exciting thing going on in my comic book world this week is that my lady, Marian has been putting up daily posts about the fantasy video game she would make
and all the possibilities and real world pollitics that spill over into games.

It's all up here:

Meanwhile: I've been up to my usual.

Speaking of Albedo-tits, Casey who who works at the Seattle comic store Zanadu
and gets dragged up to Canada to visit me and James (like we were in prison.)
send me a package with the note:
"I'm pretty sure you can figure out what is for you and what is for Stokoe"

Apparently we are just that transparent.

I've been making headway on my real real comics.
Another Multipe warheads page. almost half done with issue 3 now.

It's not much but little things like the color changing pepper gets me hyped about
doing things in color that were never possible for me before.

I've been doing a lot of drawing just for drawing this week.

Here's a catillac cats drawing, mostly I just wanted to draw Cleo.

I'm sure it was because of different character designers but
I like the range of lady cats in that show. from Sonja to Cleo.
It's so easy to fall into the comic book trap of drawing the same girl over and over.
Someday I will escape that trap. It's hard to avoid (there's tits in it)

Also 2 pink bows is pushing it Sonja. Yeah, yeah you're a lady cat. I get it.

I did a pin up for my pal Nate Simpson's NON player book that Image is putting out.

you can see the preview here:

And I dug up one of my first published pin ups from a Ninja high school swimsuit special I drew when I was 16. and tried to redraw it. i gave up on the clearly labeled "gun"

last night I was emailing back and forth with Frank Santoro of comics comics (and his own comics) fame about what's up with the King city collection and how if it was reminding him of how THB is hard to track down.

Anyway thinking about it I drew some quick THB.

And Frank wrote about it here:

Here's some THB my pal Corey did.

I was going through a ton of Coreys old stuff. So much unpublished gold.
every night I pray for an editor that would
show up at Corey or Stokoe's places and tie them to a chair and scan pages for weeks.

Sometimes getting the art that's done out in harder than just making the stuff.

Here's a couple old pages of his that I like.

This one was a there will be blood fan art on the right and his ideal x men line up on
the left.

I've been really impressed with what Emily Carroll has been up to

I invited myself alomg to a brunch she was having with Mr Inkstuds and ranted at her
about how amazing her Face all red short comic is.

You can read it here:
and her LJ

It does that great trick of not giving you all the answers.
So it reqires you to become a little more active of a reader.

And here's a cover my pal Moritat did for the P K Dick adaptation comics.
He was telling me that they had him take the neon out of the drawing for the final cover.
So it wouldn't look too much like the movie.
It's got to be rough not making blade runner look too much like blade runner
at least he kept those T2 flashback looking ships.

All that neon lost...like tears in rain

There's that new Thundercats coming out that I'm making time in my schedule to ignore.
but it got me thinking about what I liked so much about the origonal designs.

thundercatslair.org has the early draft of a pitch designs (on the left)
and the final ones on the right I assume they were drawn in the states and then sent over to Japan to be reworked--throw some 80's anime stank on it.

Lion-o's arm looks like a Rankin bass hobbitt tree,

Here's some Toshiki Hirano designs from Dangaioh and Iczer one that I think capture some of the same kind of feeling.
I like the hair on Pai Thunder and that energy on the iczer one that's made out of the same kind of something as the thunder thunder thundercats hooooo-- cat signal

this site that has a ton of good animation designs:
This morning I started reading this great collection of old Popeye comics.
I really like this series about this dude Castor trying to murder a bird.
He throws it to a shark and hires a drifter and builds an electric chair.

When is the last time Garfield hired a drifter to kill someone?

these are out of some old Genki magazines.
I like this sushi headed guy in the shadow panel.

And this one is by Satoshi SHIKI who did RIOT

4 real.

These both have a nice simple side comic feel to them.
I like the nerve of having a blank panel with just text in it.
Here's some guillaume singelin stuff.
He's got a book out in France called Pills that I need and also want.

I like this idea of Nazi astro boy fighting captain America.
And look at that wolvering safety cut.
His site:

An old Angouleme poster by Zep.

It's cool seeing his version of Jill from the Woman trap.

And here's a page from the Neuromancer comic of the Marcus garvey--space Jamacians!

more here:

and some covers i like.

Aside from all that I've been reading A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami
eating lots of bowl noodles and I'm out of Coffee.

I did some interviews

This one about getting published

I'll leave you with some Crusher Joe

And this great Dawud Anyabwile(who did Brotherman) video about burning his Marvel comics as a kid.

Dude, I never really know what to say about your blogs cos there's so much good stuff.

I can't wait to see what Corey Lewis has been working on these past few months.

Okay, also I think you've posted some Guillaume Singelin before. I freaking love his stuff! Thanks for sharing that.

I'm almost finished with that same Popeye volume- that is some amazing, wonderful stuff there. I had read several of the old Segar strips before, and of course I've watched the cartoons since before I started grade school even...but none of that prepared me for how good these were all in order like this. And I still have four volumes to go!

Castor changes his tune on the Whiffle Hen eventually...

By the way, tell your boy Moritat that he is killing it on the Spirit.

Yeah the popeye book is reminding me how much fun strips can be. I like the black ghost.

I told Moritat and he emailed me a picture of the black cat sticking her hand up Dr dooms skirt.

That Alien comic is amazing, but then it was drawn by King Simonson. Doesn't look anything like the film, but still. The whole thing was online at one point; it may have been you that linked to it, now I think of it.

The catillac cats? Wow. I haven't thought about them for years, decades even.

Speaking of cats, the Thundercats designs were great. While Transformers remains my favourite franchise of the era, I think Thundercats may have been the best. I think it gets lumped in with 80's nostalgia and doesn't get the credit it deserves. It's post-apocalyptic space-Conan, the kind of thing that would be considered high art if it were in French.

Man, these are always the best.

Love that Cyborg cover! Is that Zep? I think you posted another cover he did a while ago... I love his ladies.

It's amazing how striking Toriyama's style is. Really stands apart. The lines are almost like stained glass on there. Excellent.

Also, I love all those THB drawings.

I don't know who did that Cyborg cover, but it's definitely not Zep.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: February 8th, 2011 02:15 am (UTC) (Link)

I'm not sure who the Cyborg cover is either.
something from the 90's I'd guess.

So is that chapter six of Multiple Warheadz, or are you just writing random words?
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: February 6th, 2011 02:23 pm (UTC) (Link)
it's part of a 6 degrees of sepearation chapter.
It's weird to be using a language I have no context for. hopefully in the end it wont come off as too rediculus.

Yeah, Brotherman! That came out before I realized that comic books were "allowed" to be in black and white. The art is so great, so many interesting people in the crowds. I wad obsessed with these two toughs who would wear their knit hats so low that their eyes were completely covered--but they could still apparently see perfectly fine.

I have to see if I can find this now.

book club

I am also reading Wild Sheep Chase right now. I read Dance, Dance, Dance first and then learned that it is actually the sequel to Wild Sheep Chase. Murakami is my absolute favorite author, everything he does is amazing and I very much look forward to the American release of his most recent work 1Q84 later this year. I'm also reading Mega-City Masters 01, a great collection of Judge Dredd comics.

Oh cool I didn't know it had a sequal. Murakami is amazing, I feel like he reminds me to try harder just by reading his stuff.

SO underrated -- at least in the States

Also, I love the fanart of those characters from Heathcliff. I used to watch that cartoon all the time as a kid and I totally forgot about those dudes

Neuromancer is a great book, but I could never get into that comic. Felt pretty disjointed. I have only read it online though. In fact, I drew my own Neuromancer stuff recently for a university project. I posted it over at planet-land if you want to have a look - http://www.orbiting.planet-land.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=127

Yeah, I should,ve mentioed that I was disapointed with the graphic novel.
I much prefer your version. Those pages are fantastic.
I really like your Molly.

I did a pin up awhile back if you didn't see it.
From: scndmg Date: February 9th, 2011 12:08 am (UTC) (Link)
Thanks man, means a lot coming from you.

Your pin-up is pretty sweet. I think your Case is spot on. I'd like to do a comic based on the Panther Moderns one day, some neo-terrorist thing. Panther Moderns is such a great gang name.

Brandon my friend, I just had to watch a full Olive Garden commercial (with no skip button) just to get to this post, but it was worth it.

Oh man sweet Catillacs picture XD, those designs are so 80's in the good way.Very cool deflector dish on that motorbike.

And yes, can never stray away from the impact of Bladerunner :I. I'd like to see how some of the Mercer scenes came out in that adaptation.

I see that the time was 11:30

Also, interesting that you picked a German edition/version of that Innomables cover (naked lady on a motorbike). I actually went to great lengths to get this other cover of "les Innommables #9: Pas-de-machoire".

'cause how awesome is a naked lady on a motorbike being chased by an airplane?!

Crusher Joe, sweet! Been looking for some more space anime to get into. Finished the aaaaamazing hard sci-fi Planetes(manga and anime)recently and is munching through Legends of Galactic Heroes at the moment. Thinking about trying out Outlaw Star next.

That neuromancer page is gorgeous. Need to check that out.

I like that "he still has shrapnel in his arm from the explosion in his arm" so much context in one small sentence. And now I'm even more hyped for Sharknife DZ. I tried to get into that Do Androids comic, but I feel like them trying to distance it from the movie is to a fault, especially when the look of the movie was so heavily influenced by comics. I flicked through it and saw two people talking, it took me a while to realise one of them was Pris - she was just so dull and un-Pris like to me, I understand you can't make her Daryl Hannah, but at least make her look halfway interesting. Didn't get to see what Roy Batty looked like though...

I like how Zep translated Jill and Blueberry in his style.

And when Anyabwile talks about Marvel as "the machine", feel I can some way identify with that, maybe the parts aren't the same, but the machine is and its still crushing everything else under its heel. But hey, they're publishing BD again, let's hope it doesn't go out of print and then they just sit on the rights like with some of that Moebius stuff.

I was watching a great show from NHK last night. Hideaki Anno (Evangelion) went back to his old middle school to teach some 6th graders how to animate in 2 days. They asked him going in what kind of plan he had for teaching them and he said, essentially, "Plan? I don't have a plan."

He had them draw what they thought he looked like before he got there, then had them do a simple bouncing-ball animation, then had them interview his family and friends and draw little animations about what they'd learned. You need to go teach; you can learn 'em all about tits'n'stuff.

Intersting point yeah, I think they had some serious dudes working on the origonal and now it's just some milquetoast.

Sometime I'd be fun to do a back and forth with you about where each of our barometers of cool are set.
Did you like other Murakami books?

royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: February 16th, 2011 03:03 am (UTC) (Link)
I really like Murakami, I've been reading his stuff since I met Marian. I'm not sure if Sheep chase is the best to start with. I like how it meanders though. Hard boiled wonderland and the end of the world is my favorite I've read. He kind of clicks with the same part of my brain as raymond Chandler.

Yeah, I'm all about the Thundercats, Tigersharks, Silverhawks trifecta.
