Live and let Pie
yo,
So awhile back Paul Pope did a redraw of a Moebius panel out of his short
The apple pie.

I like treating this comics as a call and response, so I tried my hand at the same panel
but switched it up to be the Pie pie mermaid out of Dragon ball.

I should mention that this is one of the rare Moebius scenes that I've never quite jived with
since it's a sexualized shit of a girl who looks like she should still have an umbilical cord attached. But I like how he did the hair and it's just a drawing so whatever whatever.

Here's what Pope did with it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a page out of my sketchbook.
Me and my Claire and Marley were in a dinner this week when the power went out.
gnnnnnnnnnnnnn
It was kind of cool. We just hung out eating in the dark for half an hour until the power was done with its cigarrette break.

And here's another old drawing from a job I had in NYC designing action figures.
I think this was done 8 or 10 years ago.
This one was somehow connected to what was going to be a relaunch of the old Centipide game.

Comics wize, I hear my last King city should be out in a couple days.
I don't think it'll feel finished to me until I see them all in print.
And Multiple warheads is moving along, I just scanned the final pages of issue #2.
I'm on page 78 now.

I've been trying to read more National geographics, those things are full of nothing but good comic ideas. I was reading about an aztecs witch feud that happened in Mexico in the 30's and how they were into tabacco keeping out ghosts.

The Inkstuds episode that me and Stokoe and Muggles and Brian were on is up.
http://www.inkstuds.org/?p=3267
It's really just us fucking around for an hour during a pledge drive.
I'm not sorry.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And here's some serious drawings by some serious dudes.

Jordyn Bochon drawing Earthing with a switchblade

Her site:

Mike Myhre cat parachute

I'm so into how he did the undershoe.

Nich Angell drawing Joe and his character Zach from his 7string comix.
Earthling tongue sword.

And my homie Michael Vega from distant Radio comix days drew this Sexica.

http://cookingpeach.deviantart.com/

And a Sexica drawing I got out of D-pi when we were hanging out at a comic con.

http://d-pi.com/dtv/
--------------------------------------------------------------------

here's an Enki Bilal star wars drawing I hadn't seen before.
I like how Darth Vaders head is like some giant Unicron ish.

And I've been watching some Green legend Ran this week, it started a little basic, but I'm getting into it.
Tatsuyuki Tanaka worked on it. He's got some rad drawinsg from it in his Canabus works book,
he's got that manga with a tinge of French BD that I like so much:

and the whole book is up here:

and the show

and now, tea and coloring until Marian awakes.

From the look of the Bilal illo, a Enki Bilal Star Wars movie would be far more interesting that a George Lucas one.

I know what you mean

Moebius' "Apple Pie" is *very* inappropriate. Yet, this little Lolita thing is so perfect that she steps out of the realm of fantasy and into pure desire. She's the perfect vision of beauty that you can imagine being in those scenes w/o any of the touching. The embodiment of a Moebius' fantasy (though I agree with the pederasty)

all i can think of when i see that apple pie pic is 'nipply pinchy' and my thoughts end there.

your posts knock my socks off as usual. i was just looking at the pop redraw the other day and noted his a drawing can never be pornography remark.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: November 30th, 2010 05:16 am (UTC) (Link)
You're a nice man Farel.
I wonder what he meant by that.
I sure hope drawings can be porn or else I wasted my youth.
tormentedartist From: tormentedartist Date: November 28th, 2010 10:10 pm (UTC) (Link)
I would never have thought of that drawing as a Moebius drawing. It looks like some thing Manara would do.
If Moebius were American he would have never done a drawing like that. I don't know if that is a good or a bad thing. I just think that in europe people are a lot less up tight. Over here Moebius might have been tossed in jail. Having said all that I think that taking sexual advantage of a minor. I just felt that I needed to make that very clear.

when i was a kid in the 80s it seemed like every non divorced family I knew had like a big collection of national geographic,it was something I'd notice when hanging out at a friends house,(strangely divorced families always seemed to have aquariums, non divorced ones didn't)
it was one of those magazines people just didn't toss out. or they just liked having a fat row of them golden spines filling up part of a book case. didn't know at the time but there is certainly a reason why those mags get saved.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: November 30th, 2010 05:13 am (UTC) (Link)
I got the broken home and the national geographics.
Who were these swinging aquarium devorcees you were hanging with? sounds like party central.
spectator_sport From: spectator_sport Date: November 29th, 2010 12:04 am (UTC) (Link)
Huh, my download of Cannabis Works was missing all that stuff... Looks like I'll have to find the files to complete it.

I'll never forget that mermaid lady, first manga I ever laid eyes on was that exact volume of Dragon Ball.

Also speaking of snow, I have to say the snow scene in King City 10 is the best representation of the feeling on a snowy day I've ever seen in fiction. I was wondering if it was just my London shops that didn't get 12 in, thanks for clarifying.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: November 29th, 2010 02:54 am (UTC) (Link)
Nice, the first manga I saw had early dragon ball in it too.
That stuff holds up so well. It's a good gateway drug apparently.

And thanks, that snow scene was fun to draw.

I think I got a Moebius book with the Apple Pie story in it when I was like 15? It freaked me right the hell out that I hid it behind my bookshelf for years.

I eventually threw it away when I started substitute teaching at middle schools. I don't need to make the CBLDF do extra work.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: November 29th, 2010 02:31 am (UTC) (Link)
I have a hard time thinking anything that's just lines on paper should be able to get you in trouble-- It's like a thought crime. But it's a bizzare planet we live on.
larsony From: larsony Date: November 29th, 2010 05:49 am (UTC) (Link)
In general I agree with you, it was probably a little extreme. But I felt like I could more defend certain scenes in Finder as opposed to that story. It's probably more the mindset of the person than the images on the paper. Right after I commented earlier I read a story where a middle school teacher in Idaho got fired for having nude pictures of Lisa Simpson on his computer. Or maybe he quit after they started searching his computer.
larsony From: larsony Date: November 29th, 2010 05:56 am (UTC) (Link)
Since I'm not a teacher anymore (at the moment)I might mention that I actually read nearly all of Battle Angel Alita last year while watching different classes. Now it makes me wonder, why was I doing that? If any student had seen the violent stuff I was looking at they might have made a stink. ha ha. At least I wasn't the dumbass substitute that played Billy Madison for a class and got canned last year.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: November 30th, 2010 05:11 am (UTC) (Link)
So many of my good early comic memories were from books that may not have been appropriate at the time.
But also yeah, I'm not trying to work with kids.
larsony From: larsony Date: November 30th, 2010 12:24 pm (UTC) (Link)
I remember being a little kid and how dangerous the comic store felt at times, like looking through Cerberus even. I guess I'm lucky I could feel dangerous reading Alita just this year.

Having a kid changes my opinion on some books. I'll see if she wants to read Finder or Akira in time (depending on her interests a long way from now) but I got rid of some of my Invinicible books, like the one where a young superhero bursts through a dude's chests and has entrails in his hair.
larsony From: larsony Date: November 29th, 2010 05:57 am (UTC) (Link)
Oh yeah, and when I say the mindset of the person I guess I'm more thinking specifically of people that work with children. Anyway I'll stop taking up digital space posting.

Reading in bed in the early morn while it snows outside is one of the best feelings. I love walking around Vancouver when it's snowing. The city gets so quite and everyone else is too afraid to venture out.

I'm gonna have to look into this Green legend Ran!
nichangell From: nichangell Date: November 29th, 2010 11:24 am (UTC) (Link)
man, the amount i ogle over that cannabis works book in Forbidden Planet is through the roof.i should just bite the bullet and buy it.

thanks for the mention man. means a hell of a lot
mcgheeeee From: mcgheeeee Date: November 29th, 2010 03:48 pm (UTC) (Link)
miss bochon is really really good.

as for pornality, i think i'm way too desensitized at this point to even notice properly. i don't know if it was grendel: devil's hammer back when i was 14 or all the random pedo shit just bouncing off the racks in japan, but that shit looks like alice in wonderland to me at this point. does that make me a perv?

also, how did you get all these gigs in new york? how???
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: November 30th, 2010 05:08 am (UTC) (Link)
indeed.

I think most of my good jobs in Ny were from having good friends who were doing the same kind of shiz.
But there was also the Strand and the dia center. garbage jobs when I couldnt get anything better.

theresomewhere From: theresomewhere Date: November 29th, 2010 05:54 pm (UTC) (Link)
green legend rand was my first laser disc!

i even got a t-shirt it came with around here somewhere!

...(leaves to jump into the closest clutter pile to look for it)
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: November 30th, 2010 05:00 am (UTC) (Link)
Lazer disks still seem like the most super future thing ever.
What was on the shirt, just the logo?
theresomewhere From: theresomewhere Date: December 2nd, 2010 05:57 pm (UTC) (Link)
ah no, it showed the boy & the girl and some fauna or is flora? i'm always getting the two mixed up.

i've been looking for that shirt a few days. another inanimate has escaped, must be one of my missing socks smuggling the rest of my wardrobe away :)

i have to admit, laser discs were super heavy! and they kept attracting smudges so you felt like an anthropologist everytime you'd get a delicate rag out and clean it to mirror like quality once again!
wensleydale From: wensleydale Date: November 29th, 2010 09:50 pm (UTC) (Link)
There's something super cool about seeing other comic artists drawing other comic artists' characters--just finished reading the first TP of X-Statix and coming across a story Paul Pope drew, total contrast to what Mike Allred was doing. And then there was random Frank Quitely.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: November 30th, 2010 04:59 am (UTC) (Link)
I didn't know Quitely was in that,
I like that dudes stuff.
From: hoborobot42 Date: November 30th, 2010 06:55 pm (UTC) (Link)
oh man i had no idea that was a show! i had seen that tanaka stuff but for some reason hadn't ever seen the show. did you see his short for the genius party movie?
and moebius does weird stuff. i love him. but he's also weird
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: December 5th, 2010 09:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yeah I think I've seen that.
Tanaka's so good.

and yeah, Moebius being weird is part of his charm.

I'd be so thrilled to see yours.
You could give her a Wangie outfit.

Yeah, I did one earlier today, too...

http://joelcarroll.livejournal.com/115167.html

Giannis mentioned he was going to do one....and Esty said he might!
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: December 5th, 2010 09:03 pm (UTC) (Link)
nice.
such a good future take.

I was hoping Giannis would jump on this.

I kind of want to draw Moebius girl... I'm not sure how I feel drawing an underaged girl in that position though, hahaha.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: December 5th, 2010 09:00 pm (UTC) (Link)
perfectly understandable.
I noticed she gets older whenever anyone draws her.
You could do the old lady version.

about Moebius

Hey, I love your livejournal, your work and the other artists' stuff you show are awesome!

I don't know if you see it, but Moebius was the guest for french magazine Telerama:
http://labelleillustration.blogspot.com/2010/10/moebius-rhabille-telerama-29-septembre.html

And here you can see a video of him drawing stuff for Telerama:
