Helllo,

It's been getting back to normal at my Candian Bathat lair, me and Marian are both done or mostly done with the freelance jobs we were on and now were going to try for a year of just our own shit. So It's all Multiple warheads all day everyday for me. We even have booze that we're going to open after DC lets Marian know all the final corrections on her Xanadu issue.

Here's a drawing I did of her playing the best Bandicoot video game ever made
in her parents secret basement Bandacoot fireplace room.

I stated up jumping back into MW pages by playing a level and then working and then a level--repeat.

Marian has some high end final fancy-sissy 14 game that she's deep into but my brain can't deal with anythig more advanced than a Bandicoot adventure from the 90's.
I like to tell Marian that the first and last RPG that I'll ever play was Phantasy star.

I feel like any other RPG quest to save the universe would just cheapen what me and Phatasy star had together. I'm like a nobel salors widow maning a lighthouse.

Here's a drawing I did looking out my window after waking up and a grossly reasonable hour.

and the Meathaus site has started up doing daily drawings by its dudes, so I did a couple:
http://meathaus.com/

I put together this photo ish for the inside back cover of Mr Stokoe's next Orc stain issue.
A couple of the photos were taken by Marley and that dog dick thing on the lower middle was made by Marian.

And here's a couple of Moritat's pages for the Elaphantmen issue that Marian wrote.
I'm excited to see the thing done. I like the simpe kids faces mixed with the foggy european
country side.

And Marian is back to Goblins in expensive gentelman jackets on her Hchom.com

http://hchom.com/

and I read through and enjoyed the shit out of Lin R. Visel's Effort comics.
I really like her web cartoonist bear character, "bring me two boxes then!"

I like how she's able to mix sex into her comics and having it add to the story rather than turn it into porn--just like real life.

She's also running a porn comic that the bear is drawing on Slipshine--the fine internet porn comics site that I used to pay my rent doing work for.
Effort comics is here:
http://thechipperwhale.com/

And Mr Simon Roy sent me some of his new pages, I really dig how well the tones work on his stuff and his serious cave women.

Simons site:
http://www.robotblood.com/

And Giannis Milonogiannis has got some new book of his drawings that looks nice.

you can get it here:
http://indyplanet.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=4135

I recently ran into the work of this Turkish artist Kenen Yarar.

I really like this stuff kind of a Manara and François Boucq steeze to it.
He's one of those dudes who I'm amazed that I haven't seen his work before, there's so much
amazing work going on all the time it's really inspiring.

On a perfect comic book earth I would have a red phone that rang the moment anyone anywhere
drew a comic with goats involved in airplane dogfights.
RING! RING!

Here's a photo of the man drawing,I like that you can see that blue Moebius drawing leaned againt his wall.

More of his stuff here:
http://www.kenanyarar.com/

And I dug up another Hisao Tamaki drawing for the new Dirty pair manga.
I like the tie up the side space cowboy boots he's got them in.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got some comics--

I'm all about this new Empowered.
In the past I'd always been secretly hoping that Warren would make more cyberpunkery science fiction but with this he's actually seeing where superhero comics can go. It gives me faith that a good creator can run in any genre. I kept putting it down as I was reading it saing "fuck! this is a good comic"

And mr Inkstuds gave me a stack of the late Seth Fisher's books.
I like this batman snow book. It's about pre Robin Batman getting together a team of guys who
all work together in a club house to help him.

I was thinking that I'd like this book even more if Batman and Mr Freeze weren't in it.
I like the idea of a team being assembled with limitless funds to investigate weird shit
and I'd like it even more if they didn't even know who they were working for.
It seems like the kind of thing you could streach out for a million manga pages--
(and then they'd find out it's batman running the show and they'd have to kill him!)

Seth Fisher's pages in this book are amazing, I'm blown away by how much real
detail he puts on every page. Like the kind of stuff that takes thought and reference.
draw every page like it could be your last:

I like that batcape out the window panel.

And here's some Hisashi Eguchi pages I thought were cool:

Also this last week Stuart Hample died, Inksuds did a great interview with his a while back

I'm enjoying Effort Comics a lot myself. I think my favorite page (even though it's not as impressive in terms of art or story) is the one from early on where the bear character and his platonic lady friend get into a talk about tentacle monsters getting prostate cancer. It just strikes me as kind of the perfect thing to talk about.

The drawing of the demon-octopus putting sunscreen on that girl's back strikes me as the kind of think you'd draw. You should totally do a pinup like that sometime.

The Seth Fisher pages could leave me staring for hours. They kind of strike me as being almost Art Nouveau in style, with how he uses line weight and detail. There need to be more comic artists who do shit like that, it's fucking amazing.
jasonturner From: jasonturner Date: September 24th, 2010 01:44 am (UTC) (Link)
The only thing of Seth Fisher's I have is the Fantastic Four/Iron Man in Japan thing. It is a lot of fun, and he draws the shit out of the crazy interdimensional stuff.
barbarpappa From: barbarpappa Date: September 24th, 2010 01:45 am (UTC) (Link)
Oh wow, those Seth Fisher pages are gorgeous. I have to look him up.

I've been out of the comic loop for almost a year now. Just saw that you're already up to issue 11 on King City (which is awesome news btw). Are there any solid plans on a collected trade yet? Maybe with all 12 issues?

I've been itching to finally finish king city (and orc stain) for the past year now.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 24th, 2010 04:11 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks--I just wrote Tokyopop a couple days ago to try to see if I could nudge them into doing a collection with Image, no word yet. I hope so.

And yeah Fisher seems to have done no bad pages.
here's a site on him:

New Empowered is really good. Each volume is better than the last it seems, but I felt like this one had kind of a rushed ending. 4 and 5 had such epic conclusion chapters, and this one sort of felt like it ended in the middle of a phone call. Oh wait, thats because it did. Needed more Wily Pete.

And hell yeah Phantasy Star, one of my all-time favorites. Those first person dungeons blew my mind.

That hand of James' leaves me scared and haunted. How does he do it?????
wormulus From: wormulus Date: September 24th, 2010 05:13 am (UTC) (Link)
Have you ever seen nedroid draw? He holds his pen in a fist. It always amazes me when people draw with non-standard ways to hold the pen/pencil. Nedroid swears that it gives him more control.
mr_esty From: mr_esty Date: September 24th, 2010 02:07 am (UTC) (Link)
Those Elephantman pages + Simon Roy's stuff + mind blown.

They just take you there with pictures! Brilliant stuff.
hamburgerclub From: hamburgerclub Date: September 24th, 2010 03:08 am (UTC) (Link)
I had started Phantasy Star over a year ago, and I keep meaning to finish but I'm lost in a dungeon. And they all look the same. The 4th game is my favorite though. THE BEST~
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 24th, 2010 04:15 pm (UTC) (Link)
Shit, I should try out the 4th one.
I think it helped me get through the first one being in middle school --I am spoiled by my old age.
johnchrist From: johnchrist Date: September 24th, 2010 03:48 am (UTC) (Link)
Empowered is awesome, I've read them all and can't get enough.

Final Fantasy XIII is... ok... Marian can do better, try Dragon Age: Originas... it's kind kickin' my ass right now but in the way that makes your respect it... after you cry into your ovaltine.

Aparently she cried into her Ovaltine.

This may not be anything you're into, but I've been really digging most of Kenneth Rocafort's pages from "Velocity #2" (Top Cow). The writer hasn't hooked me yet, but the art is fantastic.
This is not shameless promotion, but actual adoration.

There is a scene where she's knocking out baddies while other scenes are displayed in a background like a security camera viewing booth.

And the shoes are top notch!

I can't find a good pic on the net, otherwise I'd show you. Go check it out in your favorite comic shop!
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 24th, 2010 04:20 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yeah I've noticed Rocafort's work, he draws like how I remember old image books that dont hold up on reviewing.

I've only seen his carmen sandiego looking madame mirage book. I should check out Velocity if only for the shoes.
bougieman From: bougieman Date: September 24th, 2010 08:18 am (UTC) (Link)
I too was feeling EMPOWERED was getting better with each volume, and then this one came out, and I'm thinking it is actually my least fave book in the bunch. I find it really needlessly talky, and there is more and more retread going on. In that I feel like I'm reading the same comic over and over. Don't get me wrong, there were good parts (I loved the giant dude swinging his own skull around) but overall I left disappointed. Also: the lame black bars over the swears is annoying me more and more every book. I thought I would get used to it, but it isn't happening. Either have the characters swearing, or DON'T. This middle ground thing is just feeble pussification to an extreme.

Love Eguchi. I wish more of his work was translated into english.

This Kenan Yarar guy looks to be amazing! Nice find!
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 24th, 2010 04:27 pm (UTC) (Link)
Maybe he could have a character say something that's so fucked up that it knocks all the black bars off everyones lettering for good.I've gotten mostly used to it--

This makes me think about how awesome seeing the Empowered characters drawn by you would be.

I didn't know any Eguchi stuff was in english.
I must dig.

loved that.

royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 24th, 2010 04:28 pm (UTC) (Link)

Oh man. I just found out Seth Fisher died... in 2006. And I kept waiting for new stuff from him to appear. Goddamit.
Maybe it's all the detail in his drawings that killed him. It would have killed me.

Great great post as always. So inspiring!

I freaking love Adam Warren! He'll always have a place in my heart. I saw his Dirty pair in the early nineties and decided then that I wanted to draw comics. He's got a lot to answer for. Empowered is awesome.

Also, just wondered if you'd heard of a good friend of mine. Simon Gane? He lives right near me in Bath and I love his work. Just Google him. I think you might dig him.
nervousystem From: nervousystem Date: September 24th, 2010 12:01 pm (UTC) (Link)
Simon Gane? He came to New York once and I insulted him! I still feel bad about that.

Wow, I wish someone would Translate Kenan Yarar's stuff into English (or French) ! Thanks for that link, I'd never heard of him before !
nervousystem From: nervousystem Date: September 24th, 2010 11:58 am (UTC) (Link)
I was so mad at Seth Fisher for dying. Like man, why'd he have to get drunk that night?

I have a couple of issues of "POP! Tokyo," (not to be confused with TOKYOPOP) and they're out of this world. I think it's goddamn disrespectful that DC hasn't collected POP-Tokyo, even though it didn't sell well. As much as he did for them in his too-short life.

C'mon, DC; it's never too late to correct a mistake!
spectator_sport From: spectator_sport Date: September 24th, 2010 05:24 pm (UTC) (Link)
Buying that Milonogiannis book right now.

I hate guys like Yarar, it's horrifically tantalising because their stuff is never translated and you need to pay out the arse just to get them in the native language. And god damnit do I want it.

And if you're ever in the market for an RPG that doesn't involve (much) world-saving, Persona 4 is a brilliant murder mystery RPG. Imagine Scooby Doo crossed with Pokémon, throw in the most obscure mythologcial figures you can find and you're halfway there.
kelvingreen From: kelvingreen Date: September 24th, 2010 05:44 pm (UTC) (Link)
I love Phantasy Star, so I know what you mean, although I am ashamed to admit that I have been seeing other rpgs on the side over the years. Shh! Don't tell Alis!

Here you are again showing my eyes and brain these things. Lin R. Visel's Effort comics: that's a pretty adorable style for such "mature" material. Kind of feels weird.

I remember wanting wonderboy 3.
I have plans to try to get back into master system games so there's still time!

I'm kind of sad to end King city too, thanks--but I think MW will be fun and I'll have even more freedom to try crazy shit in it--

Kenan Yarar

It was a nice surprise to see Kenan Yarar here, definitely one of my favourite Turkish artists. You can see more art from him on Deviantart, even though he doesn't really update a lot:
