Canada is hot.

Here's a Sexica pin up I did. I had fun pasting in the japanese text out of a photo magazine.

The pinup will run in Mike Vega's Ichigo girls book that he's selling at the San diego con.
Mike has got some good artists lined for the book, I think it'll be cool.
here's Mike's cover:

And just for shits after seeing the redesign of Wonder womans costume I took my own stab at it.
I'm not too thrilled with the drawing but my idea was to mostly stick with what I like about her suit but make it less American-- Since she's Amazonian or whatnot.
It's all Greek to me.

Also It was WW's 69th birthday and I was disaponted at how long it took me to find
any sleazy 69ing drawings to send people. Chop chop internet!

Also I went over to Stokoes place this week and fought these half penciled Aliens
pages he drew just for kicks out of his sweatty hands. With his monthly schedule who knows if or when he'd finish these but they're so fucking cool.
It'd be rad to see a whole Aliens book by him.

the new issue of my book is out this week:

The deamon king shows up again:

And James 4th Orc stain is just about out and Marleys first ever Vertigo book is OUT!

Marley did a really fantastic job on the guts of this book. She colored it too.
Her layouts are so impressive.

I should mention that she didn't write it ,
"how come you never hang on D'corner wid us no mo?"
Are there no black people up at DC? Are there no people who have met black people up at DC?

And here's some of James Orc stain pages--it is a fine fine orcstravaganza:

He drew 77 dicks in this 2 page spread. Dick for dick it is by far your best dollar for dick comic value on the stands.

A stand up dick comic!

I've been re-reading Finder this week.
I love this book so much.
I'm so impressed by Carla Speed Mcneil's ability to create such a deep interesting culture and
then lay great stories on top of it all casual like it was nothing.
I really like this scene:

You can read more on her site:

And I got a quarter bin Magik issue drawn by my favorite Conan artist Big John Bucema!
He always seems to get most into drawing epic fantasy scenes.
I like this Kitty pride taking down a 2 headed Saber-toothed cat with a dagger.

And then afterwards she gets all Conan riddle of steel about it.

And some other comics I got:

--The last zombie is pretty good so far, Mostly I'm just excited to see
Joe twighlight X Wight drawing some mutherfucking tanks again.

I really liked all the batshit crazy elements in this fine tale of Doom
taking over the earth using a purple dude inside a giant crystal to control everyone and end war, hunger and apartheid.

Just on this page alone you get Ion powered super being Wonderman locking up his
shitty station wagon while Mocking bird mocks us all by ruining a perfectly good pizza and Tigra trying to pass of Garfield as a real real book

And I like how DOOM does up the white house with his serious doom chair and future desk and has that male stripper Namor stand around in his skivies. That is how you run a nation!

Alright , alright before I get into the Manara Xmen, Xwomen book I want to rant for a hot minute.
As a fan of porn and former comic book pornographer I don't find any shame in the the stuff but I think it's important to note that Manara goes much deeper than just that,
I think he's one of the best to ever make comics.

that said-- As my lady pointed out this Xwomen book isn't how anyone should be introduced to Manara.
I did enjoy it, part of it for me is just seeing Manara draw the Xmen, it's like seeing the moebius Silver surfer even though the Stan lee script was shitty compaired to what Moebius
would have done alone. It's like that again.

but yeah, this book is hella sexed up. Even the X of the logo is about to be penatrated
while the O already has a fist in it.

A lot of the Claremont shit in this just cracks me up.
You have fucking Milo Manara willing to draw anything you write
a dude who before has worked with Fellini and Pratt --and Claremont has him
drawing Storm doing Tina Turner Karioke

Granted in his position I might've been tempted to have wolverine belt out some Steel claw.

And the ads and over rendered coloring I wish weren't in it.
His good lines look soooo much better if you just let them carry the art.

And man when you remember that Psylocke is a british woman cosplaying
in a braindead chinese womans skin this dragon lady outfit is kind of jacked-- plus its funny how little Psylock looks like herself as soon as someone actually draws her as looking asian.

I did really like this cutaway shot of the villans escape tube.

--So yeah, ideally I would have liked to see Manaras xmen be something more like him writing his own Wolverine book with some of the other characters showing up.
As a Manara book I like it more than his WWW or Gulliveriana but no where near his best stuff like the Bergman books or Butterscotch---I think its about the level of his- Pranese The Prison Planet.

About a Red Soja on the Conan Scale--

And since I mentioed it here's a cool example of moebius layout and finals for a Silver surfer page

And a Cleopatera DC cover.

James Stokoe draws these pages "just for kicks ?"

That's just... wow...

I'm actually surprised you gave Conan the destroyer two swords. My favourite part about that movie is pausing it on Grace Jones battle faces. It was such a weird cast-away of the first, tit-laden, movie.

You guys, and your epic circle of comic making. Looking forward to picking this new stuff up.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: July 9th, 2010 06:22 pm (UTC) (Link)
When I made that Conan scale I think it was based more on how much Conan was in the movie and less on how good it was.
I love a Grace jones Battle face
and that movie does have the great scene where the pretty statue turns into a fat cthulu beast.

Stokoe is a danger to humanity putting together pages like that while already slipping us hardcore crack-comix in the form of Orc Stain. He must be stopped, lest he bust out some crazy colours like he is in OS.

Managed to pick up #10 yesterday, along with Jim Rugg's Rambo 3.5, am about to read them with my lunch sushi :)

(and thanks for reminding me that I've never read that X-women or Moebius Silver Surfer book - I am a slacker when it comes to eurartists)

In all fairness to Matt Wagner, who wrote that Madame Xanadu story and has been a pretty good scripter for a lot of years now, that story was supposed to be set in the pre-civil rights 50s or early 60s, when that sort of dialogue might have been a little more likely to have been heard. WHich doesn't make it any easier to read in 2010, but context is the key...
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: July 11th, 2010 10:06 am (UTC) (Link)
I think it's more his way of writng the dialog that I find bad. you can have a character say
"how come you never hang on the corner with us no more"
and get all the felling of his voice without it being--
"how come you never hang on D'corner wid us no mo"

Im saying---
jbacardi From: jbacardi Date: July 11th, 2010 11:33 am (UTC) (Link)
True. i think he was trying a little too hard to create atmosphere...and yeah, some of that dialogue jumped out at me as well.

I think Mr. Stokoe should draw, like, EVERY COMIC ON THE PLANET for just one year so we can all sit back and be amazed at how well he can set up a page. Dude's got MAD SKILLZ! Meghan saw one of his 2-page spreads in "Orc Stain" and practically shit her pants. When I told her it was all done by James and James alone, I think she actually did.

My only experience with Carla Speed McNeil's work was her run on "Queen and Country," but I really dug her art style. I'll have to check out that webcomic link you posted. D'you know if there's a RSS feed to which I can subscribe? I also haven't been reading "Madame Xanadu," in spite of all the good things I've heard about the book. That Matt Wagner fellow apparently writes him some good comics; perhaps I'll start picking up the trades.

Marley's art style reminds me of Becky's, only smoother and more rounded. What else has she done? I feel like there's something I missed....

Geez, the things James for fun are amazing. I just hope he keeps drawing crazy awesome stuff like that forever.

And your King City stuff continues to look great, Brandon. I need to get 9 and 10, hopefully today. The previews always get me pumped up.

kelvingreen From: kelvingreen Date: July 9th, 2010 05:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
The best bit about Emperor Doom is that he takes over everything, and really does make the world a better place, proving just how much of an arse Reed Richards is, but then gives it all up because he gets bored. Brilliant.
From: super_donkey Date: July 9th, 2010 06:16 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yeah, that X-Women book is a mixed blessing. Glad we got it, but as much as I like Dave Stewart, the coloring is < the original b/w release. The story also makes ZERO SENSE and there's weird shit like storm playing slap & tickle w/ captain rape, psylocke's dubious ethnic grounding, etc. Oh well, it'll go in my collection until/if I ever get a copy of the italian version, where the b/w art will tickle me more and the fact I can't read it would improve my enjoyment 10fold

epic post as usual...I have that Magik mini-series. Those marvel short series from then are highly under-rated...The Cloak and Dagger series was good too.

I actually really liked the color work on the new Manara X-comic -- and you know how much I usually prefer black and white. Everything else you said about it was dead on, though.

And wouldja look at Cunt laying the lips to Mockingbird! He is really just part of a long line of kissy Cunts throughout the history of comics.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: July 10th, 2010 10:33 pm (UTC) (Link)
I love that stuff.
man one of us should do a clint VS cunt comic soon.

The coloring on the manata wasnt horrible but it always bugs me when a colorist ads lines to the art.

I met a girl at a friend's party several months ago who is an editor for Vertigo. Therefore: SOMEbody at Vertigo has met at least ONE black person one time.

Stokoe's Aliens pages are the best thing I've seen all week.

Justin showed me the Manara book yesterday and it made me really sad. I just couldn't figure out why it looked so bad -- I'm glad that they included a couple of black and white pages at the back, because at first they didn't even look like the same pages I'd just flipped through. I didn't know that color could do THAT much damage. That was a color-crime on the order of the American re-release of the Incal. The worst bit was the color of the womens' lips -- everybody has these just-punched-in-the-face bright red wax lips. Just leaving the lips the same as the skin tone would make that book 50% better.

You should visit our new studio sometime. We almost named it Brandon Graham sleepaway camp in anticipation of you using it as a hotel room.

Nate--- Dude, sorry to hear about your biking induced health problems-- I hope it's better now.

yeah it always seems to be the worst crime a colorist can do to me when they add lines in the color.

im excited that you dudes have a studio I imagine I will sleep in it much in the future.
I thank you in advance.
bettyboop_comic From: bettyboop_comic Date: July 15th, 2010 03:44 pm (UTC) (Link)
I don't want to get too technical & I know you colour your own stuff, but don't you add lines to sexica when you put her in tan-panties? (which I love. You draw the bestest of all these dudes, now draw some wore!)

be seeing you
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: July 15th, 2010 08:43 pm (UTC) (Link)

I meant lines the artist didn't make by a colorist that isn't the origonal artist.
bettyboop_comic From: bettyboop_comic Date: July 15th, 2010 08:48 pm (UTC) (Link)
I knew that. I was being bad. Sorry for that. Please keep drawing pretty naked ladies for me & everyone -_^

royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: July 10th, 2010 10:11 pm (UTC) (Link)

Yeah that dude draws a lot. Also you seem to put out more fat graphic novels than anyone so I can see how you feel overworked sometimes.

as far as Xanadu, yeah I think it's more his way of showing it that's bad. you can have a character say
"how come you never hang on the corner with us no more"
and get all the felling of his voice without it being--
"how come you never hang on D'corner wid us no mo"

I'm skipping SDCC this year so I can stay home and draw. hopefully we'll meet up at some con soon though.

I often find myself thinking of that same Finder scene. The weapons at the bottom of the lake is so evocative.

Also Hellballazer pops into my head thanks to the Finder:Dream Sequence book.

Many thanks!

The Stokoe Aliens stuff and the Moebius layout made my day. And, damn you, now I'm going to have to head back to the store for X-Women. The wondrous art coupled with the dementia of Claremont is too much to pass up.

Also, I wrote an ever-so-brief review of King City at www.surfingthebleed.blogspot.com. I aim to do a full review soon, as it has really been top shelf. I'll have an Orc Stain review up this week, I imagine.

Love your epic comics posts,
Jon Burr

Re: Many thanks!

Me, too, buddy. Weed makes me kill and hump things. In that order. I'm mostly referring to how fun and alive your stuff is. I feel like I could have watched you draw the comic. I'm not trying to besmirch your process, but it seems like you just drew the shit you wanted to draw, which is so refreshing.

It's like PREDATOR. I was trying to figure out why that stupid action movie rules and I think I got it. They had this theatre director John McTiernan at the helm, right? And then they got this goofball action writer Shane Black to play Lt. Hawkins just in case McTiernan lost his shit. Then they got a bunch of character actors and pro wrasslers to play the principles. I really think they just holed up in the jungle and just put it together, in disbelief that they had their gigs. No writer's room. No stockholder's meeting. They just made an action movie. With pussy jokes. And that's what King City feels like to me. In the best possible way.

About to dig into Orc Stain #4. Fucking A!

Re: Many thanks!

word. It just makes me paranoid and nap.
But yeah thanks, It's like self presevation to just draw what you want.

I didn't know all that about Predator, awesome fucking movie "I aint got time to bleed!"

OS 4 is a fun issue, I think you'll dig it.

I just noticed they've hastily pasted in some sea next to Dr Doom's white house, to make Namor's presence marginally less ridiculous. That's pretty funny!
