comic book almanac - Brandon Graham
comic book almanac

Look at this horrible gluten bear!

That thing plauges me everytime I go to the fancy grocery store my lady shops at.
Fucking gluten bear!
clearly geneticly engineered by some scientist with no code of ethics.

Things have been cool. I had a couple days of just drawing for fun.
Here's a pin up I did for my pal Corey Lewis's Seedless comic that Image is putting out.

She's got a bannana taped to her leg so she can have a fried bannana when she lands.
I think I was trying to chanel old Ninja high school Asral robot boots in that.

And here's a sketchbook drawing of a park near my place.

I've been trying to go outside and draw more, keeps me sane.

And the Clockwork girl movie is still going along, I've been only working on it a couple days a week so I can get back to my comic drawing.

The last couple weeks I've been doing designs on it.
This is a for a cloak that I don't think will end up in the final thing.

And here's one of the buildings, the final thing has a lot of plants
that I drew sepreatly.

And at the same time I was doing that my dear sweet Marian has been
doing a shitload of Goblin designs on her Hchom site.
This cutaway Goblin knoll is so rad.

I knoll!

Lots more here:
Shes got a whole series of goblin clothes shes been working on.
It's so cool.

And Simon Roy has been finishing up the Clockwork girl storyboards.
Here's some pages from a short crime comic he drew that Mr Ed Brisson wrote

you can read the whole thing here:

And here's some Giannis Milonogiannis pages that he'd sent me awhile back.
It's called the collector.
It's his attempt at doing a Moebius style thing where he made it up as he went along.

And Giannis has a 2nd old city blues up here:

And I got some comics this week.
I never wrapped my head around Fusion when it was coming out.
It's about future space mercenaries but it had a ton of different people drawing the thing.
it feels like indy anthropmorphic dudes making a run at something more mainstream.

More importantly Im all about this cover with an otter in a space suit.

it's got a bunch of different 80's indy cats drawing it--steve gallacci of Albedo fame
Lela dowling --who I just know from designing the Dirty pairs cat sidekick in the
Warren version. and Ken Mackalin who did a rad book about a cat and rabbit in the future called Contracters. --and Phil Foglio who I know from his xxxenophile porn empire.

And the last generation--check out this future compound the issue starts with:

I havent read the saga of the man elf mostly I'm just glad someone had the nerve to name a comic that. sometimes I title is enough to sell a book to me.
and the toryama thing is just something I found on this internet.

Also I've been playing some Heinlein audio books while drawing--Starship troopers
i pretty rad. I wish I'd read it before seeing the --__-- movie.
Japanese Heinlein covers--

I love that moon is a harsh mistress.

And i think the book on the left here is called Esperspy
I think dude in the turben is just going to see how the fight plays out.

I'm all about the logo on this robot mag--and gundam the ride.

Also I like these early Aeon flux , Peter chung drawings.

And this is a wooden model that they built for the Rock and rule movie.

And some southern cross --the Robotech middle child.
I like her in that space suit on the right just chilled out on a giant pink hand.
I have no idea who invited the DC dorks.

And these serious old school back to the future top gun nerd cosplayers. badass.

And some Kenichi sonada art I hadn't seen.
Him drawing sexy lady versions of the Star blazers dudes.

Did he need to do one of the bald old scientsist?
you think that i-q9 is a lady robot?
If I had the ear of some major insitute of learning I would try to talk them into a
study of this thing where if dudes like something they need a sexy lady version of it.
"I like wolverine but what if he were a hot chick I could have sex with?"
They even made the female woverine an underage hooker to facilitate it.

They call her X-23 but my guess would be more like x-15 if shes an x-day.

I was talking to a friend of mine about it all and how we fall victim to it
at least on the lesser crime of liking to see our girlfriends in our clothes.
(marian sleeps in my old tin tin and Albedo shirts--awwwww)
It's all so fucking Ranma.

Anyway here's some Utiyama Aki pages. i really like the hats on the left and
whatever ginocological illogical shit is going on on the right.
that aint right.

Also this week I've been listening to endless Yelawolf on loop.
Such good shit. Years ago I would always talk about how I just wanted to listen
to gas station rap-its rad to hear southern hip hop that sounds southen and
isnt just on some "I like wresteling pigs but I also like gold" bullshit-

And here's some Kirby Krackle the band of Jim Demonakos who runs the Emerald City ComiCon and The Comic Stop. deep nerd rock.

more here:

and I'll leave you with the Moomin theme.

Sing the best song ever heard..

As always a great selection I like seeing bit of Aeon Flux though I will always have a sweet spot for Phantom 2040. Also if your after Moomin pics check out the Cannabis Works book it has a whole boat load of the pencil concept stuff for the animated show which is just awesome.

I know you're not a big Gundam fan, but have you ever seen Aura Battler Dunbine? It's by the same dude who made Gundam, but it's more liek a mish-mash of AD&D and Gundam in a parallel universe. Or something along those lines (it's hard to describe).

Oh, my copy of Pillow Fight finally came in the mail last week. NBM must have the slowest shipping on the planet Earth, but Meghan and I read it, and she finds it hysterical to this very day. In fact, she read it again when we got home from work yesterday. Classic stuff, my friend.

I like the Yas stuff on early gundam just not all the stuff after that. and yeahh I should pay more attention to Dunbine, ive gone about as deep as reading animage articles about it way back when.

Thanks for getting the PF-- Im glad Meghan likes it.
I appologize for the lack of plot in that. it was tough times.

0079's the SHIZ, though I do dig 0080 and Zeta as well. The rest of Gundam is hit-or-miss and mostly "meh." Dunbine, though, is solid through and through, though I have a hard time liking it more than I do Gundam. Not sure why. It's just a shame the DVDs are so hard to come by.

Speaking of cumming by, you have no reason to apologize for PF, my friend. Sometimes a dearth of plot can be more fun.

A) take something dudes really like
B) replace it with a sexy chick
C) replace the sexy chick with a middle-aged dude with fallen arches and a skin condition (dude looks nasty in a chemise)
D) the dude in C then goes on to save the world anyway

that lady in that group of cosplayers on the far right has a striking resemblance to my aunt. in fact, i feel like calling her up and asking her if she was every in such a cosplay group...

also fried banana? i love it.

man, the 2 ladies on the right are both 100 percent aunt. I'd like it if you treated this as a dark secret that you KNOW to be fact and awkwardly brought if up whever you were alone with her, refusing to belive anything else.
darkmachines From: darkmachines Date: June 4th, 2010 12:23 am (UTC) (Link)
I think, sir, this is a fine idea. I will print this pic out and constantly try and use it as a bargaining chip with her too.

i totally dig the Flux sketches, way bendy and Schiele-y. Also amazing Milo stuff and Marian has some seriously cute goblin fashion things going on.

What is up with that crazy Ranma leg?!

I love the even cheesier Japanese Moomin intro:
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: June 3rd, 2010 06:13 pm (UTC) (Link)
The japanese intro is so much classier, it doesnt even have anyone swinging from a rope in it.

Pretty rad stuff, another reason to buy Seedless I like it.Love the Giannis stuff, it's one of your best findings (sic)ever. Also that whole transgender shit, didn't it all start with wonderwoman/supergirl?

"They call her X-23 but my guess would be more like x-15 if shes an x-day."

What is it about cut-away mountain lairs? It's practically ALL I drew as a kid. So cool.

I don't want a banana NOW, but I want a fried banana LATER, so..... yeah.

I have a gene in me that requires me to freak the fuck out whenever I see Moomin-anything. :D
katimazie From: katimazie Date: June 3rd, 2010 11:22 pm (UTC) (Link)
That cutaway mountain drawing gives me nostalgia real bad for these books of mazes I had as a kid (and still have tucked away) that had a lot of fantastic drawings of different environments, like a fairy house that spread out over two trees and a set of tiny islands that a pirate was going across. What was really cool about it is that the dead ends in it were rarely terrible things that would supposedly hurt you, most of the time they were like side rooms and small houses and stuff that actually made you want to look at them. I would make up stories about the inhabitants going about their day in those houses just because they were so cool.

I can't help but think if I ever did a comic called The Saga of the Man Elf it would totally be porn. And I would feel no shame over this.

There's a set of Metal Gear Solid figures out there that are the main guys redone as scantily-clad cute ladies. I vaguely understand the appeal of it, but I still find it kind of strange. I can't help but suspect that part of the thought behind it is so guys who're scared that liking the characters makes them gay can have a version of them that's "okay" to think about screwing.
johnnythunderz From: johnnythunderz Date: June 4th, 2010 02:08 pm (UTC) (Link)
coming back to the Dirty Pair fanzine idea ... noe combine Dirty Pair + TinTin + Barbarpapa + Moomin + some Mech tech ... wow ... that would be one kick ass comic! hehehe

also nice to see that woodn modell of that police car from rock n rule. i really would like to see some making of of that one. they used a similar techniq in heavy metal with those bomber planes. took a model, painted it black with white lines on it, filmed it and painted the negantive. so cool! love them oldskool tricks.
dj_flx From: dj_flx Date: June 4th, 2010 02:08 pm (UTC) (Link)
Like Craqued said, there is something crazy wrong with someone's leg in that Ranma thing. Anatomy!

I take it you've never seen the Starship Troopers anime then, eh?

At least after reading the book, then watching the movie(s) destroy all that is good about it, the anime was a comparatively pleasant acid trip.

X-23/15: lolz

Also another reason I pay no attention to Marvel books almost at all.

That seedless pinup, ahhhh:) Also loving the logo/stitchwork on the dressy design you did there.

but...who's Utiyama Aki?!?! How did I not know of her before? I think I found her site, but it's all 4-koma?

think i'll doodle a female version of a character later today...

royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: June 6th, 2010 01:36 am (UTC) (Link)

Utiyama Aki's site.
Some of the shit on there is a little too X-15

I hope you're serious of a female version, but who?
mcgheeeee From: mcgheeeee Date: June 6th, 2010 04:48 pm (UTC) (Link)

Re: 内山亜紀

X-15 indeed! Still tame compared to some of what they put on the stands over there.

As for more ahem, 'mature' females, here's the quickie from this morning: http://mcgheeeee.livejournal.com/8499.html

The character choice is a bland one, but I'd like to think I executed it well. I wanna do more, for some reason, but I'm having trouble thinking of non-American characters other than those from FF...any suggestions?
