Hello,

It's been one of those weeks where drawing feels like more work than I remember it.
I'm pushing through. I've been going over to Stokoe and Marleys place and
watching a lot of Buffy to deal. The sweaters they wear on that show are killing me.

Here's a drawing I did for the back cover of King city 10--
It's some of castmasters of yesteryear.

Sometimes I grow soo fond of characters after one drawing.
I could have some fun doing whole books about the 1920's french catmaster lady and her Meow Haraja. I put the dates that they livd -I didn't even have the heart to kill her off.

Here's a couple of the extras I did for #10 cat and vehicles.

and Marian did a Catmaster for the back of 10 I love how she draws this gentelman cat.

I think King city 5 might be out this week.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

And I just saw this ---fucking comic book event!----
--My pals Corey and Sheldon were arguing about football
and it prompted this from corey--

I I'm all about this comic book event.
via
http://reyyy.livejournal.com/
super sayin'

Also John G did this great limited print for sale to benefit some of his fellow Clevelanders:

more about it up on John's site.
http://ninepanelgrid.blogspot.com/2010/02/clevelyn-prevails.html
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I remembered this week that I based Joe's early shirt in KC off
of what the dude inthe movie The Beach wears.

When I was first drawing KC i was really into the way that movie starts.
a guy getting a secret map. I would like it if that was the only
way they were allowed to start movies. I would never get sick of it.

Another KC thing I throw in a lot is Nagisa's hair clip from Iczer one.

And I ran into this bunch of manga dude photos. I like seeing how the faces
relate to the work. I would like a whole book of pictures like this:

Anyone know who the guy on the lowest of lefts is --i like that drawing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was reading Erik larsen's CBR artice (c b article) about
how american publishers could start to put out big 2000 AD/jump style books.
I think it's a great idea. I would like to see it tried.
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=24545

I was thinking was one way for America to have a shonen jump style anthology
would be for it to be all online Like onemanga.com and then collect each story in print after they rach 100 pages or so. -like a collborative version of what derek kirk kim does.
or what the Planet land dudes are already doing:
http://planet-land.com/

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been reading Children of the Sea:
I really like how this character looks with her jacket that's all patches and no shirt.

And Daisuke Igarashi--

He's so good at enviroments and weather.
I was typing today that some of the most exciting manga is boring done
well. I guess it's because subtlety is hard to pull off.

I like how he cuts out the backgrounds here for a panel.
just to cut out everything but the 2 characters.

It reminds me of something Dave Sim said about if you're not doing a story with
just 2 peopel talking yu're missing the essance of what's human.

another thing I liked in this was seeing a real setting that I
recognized from another manga. Atsushi Kamijo's Sex-- I just read the sequal is called "After sex".
Nice. I would have called it "afterglow" or "nap"

A comic with Kamijo's character T-oy in some Graffitti page.
I think that's toy, unless he's just calling her that.

mad skills yo.

and here's a young fujihiko hosono, dude is not afraid to put shoes on a chicken.
I can respect that.

And a crusher joe comic he did-- I like that sun comics logo.
It speaks of good comics and orange soda.

a cartoon of his with a quality ninja pig.

And this !!!!

and here's some Jean-Pierre Gibrat--Pretty french ladies. bon jour ladies.

The only thing I've read of his in english was his sexy lady Pinocio
comic called Pinoccia. I think he tits get bigger when she lies.
If he didnt draw so good that might seem less than classy.

Look at the smug look on his face--he knows what he did.
Lie tits indeed!

and some of his layouts:

and a couple pannels from a French skateboarding comic.
Fink and Cran? I hope that's short for Crayon and not Cranberry.
Not that I dont like cranberrys.

And Gall force, I added a Kenichi Sonada. sexy no?

And some Toriyama Dr Slump. I like the invisable kid

And Toriyama Dragon Quest. WIZARD WARRIOR THEIF CLOWN!

And I finnaly looked up what the origonal Mario brothers 2 game looked like before
took it and made it into a mario game, Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yume_K%C5%8Dj%C5%8D:_Doki_Doki_Panic

I have always wondered about that.

And here's some old manga covers I thought were cool.
Homo Homo 7 might be the best comic tittle ever.

awesome.

I dug up some Evalgelion porn comic by Isutoshi, the guy that did Slut girl (worst comic title ever).
I find his porn kind of vanilla
But I like his storytelling. this one ends with pregnancy--

Here's some old 70's art. An ad for pants on the left.

great on trips. jesus....

And SMUURRRFFSSSS! it's like a where's waldo statue.

I wonder if anyone has drawn all 100 smurfs?

And I thought this was cool.

And some comic themed signs.
City hunter bathroom and asterix wheel chair. for wheel.

Tin tin mural.

aight.
and now I wash dishes and then draw comix.

I keep wandering into random comic stores hoping to find a new issue of King City. Impatient! But, if all of them contain something even a fraction as awesome as those old Catmasters, then the wait is more than totally worth it.

good to see discussion on weekly comics again, and with a view that shows some faith in the idea. All the stuff in this post is adequate fuel for the future of ink.

Also the Igarashi stuff is always nice in appreciating a more natural free-handed approach to drawing. Looking at his stuff definitely helps decompress the nerves to get to the basics of good scenery. Man french stuff is so french, it seems like only real men can tame it's energy XD

There are 100 smurfs? And they all have names? Damn.
rsjr From: [info]rsjr Date: February 9th, 2010 04:18 pm (UTC) (Link)
It's been written that Smurf Village has a population of exactly 100 smurfs. Smurfette made 101. Baby Smurf 102... then those toddler smurfs, robo-smurf, blanka smurf, etc etc...

Of the original 100, tho like, maybe a good 20-30 maybe 50 tops have actual names. The rest are all seekers and sweeps.

Mind you, I'm smurfing on my smurfing recollection of smurf infosmurf which hasn't been updated since nineteen eighty-smurf. Accuracy is questionable.

That idea mentioned by Erik Larsen is something that I've been into for a while. My friends the House of Twelve have been making a digital, phone-based version of this sort of anthology.

I'm extremely excited about the idea of it.

So much so that I've been trying to think of the logistics of putting together my own spin-off of that.

bamfed From: [info]bamfed Date: February 9th, 2010 09:30 am (UTC) (Link)
I've been saying something similar to what Eric Larsen wrote for a long time now. I think they can even keep the cheap recycled paper. Monthly comics need to stop being treated as this objects to be treasured and kept.
They're flimsy, insubstantial pieces of stories. We need to let them go and collect better versions in trade format later.

I think the one thing American comics have going for them is their sense of continuity. It more often drags stories down than helps them, but that's because there are just plain too many books.

But the real magic of those old Lee/Kirby/Heck/Wood/Etc comics was the sense of continuity between stories.

Spider-man would meet up with the Fantastic Four. The Avengers would go to the X-Men for help. It just got lost when there were too many characters to keep track of.

Larsen gives Vertigo a free pass in his suggestion, but i think it's the best place for the change to happen. Imagine if Oni were to try this out. I would kill for a weekly magazine featuring shorter Scott Pilgrim, Multiple Warheads, Wonton Soup, and Sharknife.

In my dream world, the Marvel-style continuity would be carried over into the indie comics. Imagine Johnny Boyo teaching them a thing or two about cooking in the Guang Dong restaurant. Or Sexica flirting with Scott Pilgrim.

In all honesty, I don't see any of this happening. Comic fans are notoriously stubborn and stupid and unwilling to change. But one can dream can't he.

TL;DR Version: Comics should be more like Jump. :P
royalboiler From: [info]royalboiler Date: February 9th, 2010 10:48 pm (UTC) (Link)
I think a lot of what Larsen was saying is that if it wasn't a industry wide change then it wouldnt take hold.

Although, I have thought about what an Oni style anthology would be like. I just don't think the interest is there to market it and fund the artists in the way that it would need to work. With a weekly (or even mothly) I think you'd need to have the artists working at least a year ahead of the print dates. bleh.

also with an anthology if it wasn't too regular it'd do the same thing that i dislike about OGN's where it takes artists out of getting regular books out. My ideal for the Sharknife/orc stain set is to have the books staggered so there's always something cool on shelves every month rather than 1 book a year by each artist.

The good news is that me and Stokoe are working on some crossover stuff. that should be fun.

I'm waiting anxiously for Sheldons dignified response to this slur. By "dignified" I mean viciously offensive.

And tanks a bunch for the link! We can only hope it builds into a sort of onemanga: to slowly bring up the number of artists and comics being made specifically for it and maybe one day transition into a printed anthology would be stellar. And personally I would like to collect the entirety my comic into a big leatherbound hardcover once it's done, with some stylish gold leaf on there for extra class.

I would love to see a weekly comic Jump book, but I honestly don't think people would support it. Perhaps if it was bi-weekly instead as I don't think many of the artists or anyone else would have the stamina to keep up with weekly deadlines. And I actually quite like shitty paper as it's easier to bend and stay open; it's the shitty inks that wipe off that get my goat.

And I'm surprised the Herge estate hasn't sued that wall, considering how much they like their legal cases.

Hey there, Brandon.

I found and purchased an entire box of Moebius trading cards last week! Since you are the reason I am even aware of his existence, I was wondering if you'd like me to send a few unopened packs your way, if you don't own them all already. Just as a little thank you for making great comics that taste great, and for introducing folks to new and exciting flavors that linger on your eyeballs like stray lashes (though much less annoying).

Good day, sir!

Catmasters among the centuries! I love it!

Man I just got issue 4 of King City, I just buy them for the backup comix, since I already own it in TPB. But they're worth the $3 alone, which is cheap compared to most books. I ready the afterword and saw you're selling original pages for $150! Soooo much money and I want to spend it so badly! I'd want to get like one of those back up comix though even, since they're a self contained story on like one page. I love that shit. They're always weird and great. I also want to get issue three of October Yen, since I feel so incomplete with only having 1&2, happen to have one?

Thanks.

I'll dig around, I might only have one copy of that thing.
I'm putting out a collection of a bunch of older stuff next year. i dont know if Oct yen will make it in but it'll at least have the unpublished 3rd universe so big.

The new format that Erik larsen presents on that link is exactly the way that marvel and dc comics are printed in brazil ever since I was a little kid. When I first start reading super heroes comics, I would buy the X-men and the Wolverine montly title, And that book was 82 pages, carrying 4 diferent original titles on a small sized book (like manga format). In fact, you could buy all the marvel stuff just buying 6 books, or you could simply subscribe to then directly from the distribuitor, receiving a monthy huge platic package at home. Best thing was that every time marvel or DC came up with a big story that would made you buy a lot of books you don't follow just to read the hole thing, on this format you could read the thing as one big 82 pages story.
Botton line is that the system that Erik larsen is proposing would work for sure based on what's been going on in brazil for the last 40 years regarding marvel and DC.
royalboiler From: [info]royalboiler Date: February 11th, 2010 10:13 pm (UTC) (Link)
Interesting, I had no idea.

French skateboarding comic

That's tran on the truck from the French comic, not cran. He's actually one of the most famous French writers, as is Horfe, who's on the side of the truck.

Any idea what's going on in the graffiti manga?

Thanks for the heads up.
my knowledge of french graffitti doesn't go much farther than Mode2.

I'd only be guessing about what happens in the manga.
it looks like the guy shows up talking about Irie and
the girl is COT and she gets pissed and goes to paint something awesome but acidently paints over an Irie piece in the last panel.

I'm in love with the Cat Master from the 20's. Please do more with her. She could be, like, your version of Adel Blanc-Sanc or something. God knows what kind of puns and cultural criss-crossing you'd come up with mixing in shit from the 20's.

I recently had a chat with a guy who said he'd translated "King City" for a French publisher. He didn't know anything about the release, though.

- It must have been hard to translate, what with all the puns", I said
- Oh yeah, it was", he said.
royalboiler From: [info]royalboiler Date: February 11th, 2010 10:11 pm (UTC) (Link)
oh cool.

The french publisher are still waiting on the last 30 or so pages before they get it out.

I've been wondering how much they had to change with the puns. poor translator.

Catmasters is amazing.

If you like stuff from the 20's and 30's you have to check out the Jeeves and Wooster boxset. It's a tv series with Hugh "the dude from House" Laurie and Stephen Fry from their younger days. It's based on the PG Wodehouse stories and it's hilarious. One of my all time favourite shows.

I've just talked my lady into watching the series

I always get the minnie the moocher song Wooster sings
