EYE station: nobra - Brandon Graham
EYE station: nobra

I turned 33 this week.
to celebrate I ate cheezeburgers in front of the first 3 hours of 24.
murder and torture and cheeseburgers.

I found a comic I'd drawn a couple years ago as a note to myself.
Really personal stuff about my deepest fears and hopes.
I planned on doing something like that this year but it devolved into this:

Stokoe came up with the --leg of their own book title joke.

Origonally it was going to be about me going to meet the gods of comics.
I was going to draw them as big mount rushmore faces of Tezuka Herge and Kirby.
(my pal corey did a good comic where the comic god looked like a giant transformers head)

The bathtub stuff was all a lead up to meeting the comic gods but then as I was penciling it
I realized I needed to turn in another KC back cover. so it became one of those.
This will be on issue 8.

Meanwhile Marian has been in her secret lair (living room/studio)
playing the video game Dragon Aids and making comics about it:

I always imagined Klingon warnog to be like xmas Eggnog but made out of the
blood of your fallen foes.

The blood of your fallen enemies is hella fattening.

Oh, also for my birthday Marian and her mom gave me this futuristic science fiction
coffee replicator device.

It has a brew pause button on it.
I'm calling it Dr brew Pinski
or Brew-ba-papa

That is meant to be J jonah jameson of spiderman fame with a kid and play
cut and hammer pants.

And something else out of my sketchbook.
um-pum indeed.

And here's some Appleseed ish I thought was cool.

I've been all about pre computer art Shirow this week.
even more than usual.

I like this 4 page thing he did that came out a couple years ago
in a book called A decade of darkhorse.
It feels like a Shirow heavy metal story --tits and robots and all.

It's funny how a dude who is so adamant about details --how a swat mission
would realisticly go down and all that--never has any problems with characters
showing up for combat shit in pink ballerina outfits.

That and a bunch more good shirow is up here:

One thing I found out about on that site that I was tottaly unaware of is
a whole Ghost in the shell book that Shirow drew by hand before he
decided to just make glossy computer porn for robots.

And it's been out in english for years. SHIT!
I like how nerdy the tittle is--
Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human-Error Processor.

I do dramaticly prefer appleseed to Ghost in the shell stuff
but the technical ability is still there.

I am excited. here's some pages I pulled off the internet.

I'm into that backflip on the top left. how it leads you into the next panel.

And here's some Naoki Urasawa thumbnails.--20th century boys i think

And some old stereo ads with that rock manga To-y that I am so fond of.

boys don't rush to be men" you listening--
Boyz II Men, ABC, BBD The eastcoast family?

oom do do do da ayye ayye yiiiiiiii

oh look, old japanese Dune book covers--
the sleeper has awoken

And a valerian page I thought was cool. I like how Mézières did the shadows on the water.

and some other old japanese magazine stuff I liked.

This guys stuff reminds me of Rockin jelly bean.
I like his mazinger z lady.

more of his stuff here:

And a video from the french comic TRAMP

And a Tony Jaa video my pal Corey Lewis did a million years ago.
This video is really like watching coreys soul

Aight im off to harass my dear sweet lady.

oh also I wanted to mention the fine dudes at Comicsforserious
have been doing Beast week talking about Marians book.

Last night I had a dream that I went to a comix shop looking for King City and I asked the comix guy and he gave me some 70's space manga called UFO that actually looked pretty similar to those DUNE covers. I tried to correct him but he just kept talking about how good UFO was and I was like FINE OK!

Happy birthday! 33 is an important year, when you get to 34 then you will have one up on Jesus.

and glossy computer porn for robots sounds like the most apt description of Shirow's work since he gave up being an ink and paper champion.

there isn't a single artist that I have been a fan of who didn't seem to lose a good deal of what made them great when they shifted to completely digital techniques.

And that Briarios costume is just too much.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: December 7th, 2009 04:12 am (UTC) (Link)
Yes! take that Jesus!
I think its just too easy to make bad art on a computer.
we are in aggreement.

Giannis M

Gits 1.5 is really really good. There's a scene i like that takes place on a golf course. It's in that crazy realistic early 90's shirow style. Have you read that appleseed short story called "game" or something? I'm not sure when he did that, but the style seems to be the same.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: December 7th, 2009 04:21 am (UTC) (Link)

Re: Giannis M

Hey Giannis,

I think I've read all the appleseed that was made but I'll have to dig around for game--appleseed data book?
Hopefully they'll translate some of his older Gun dancing and all that. i need that stuff.
From: (Anonymous) Date: December 7th, 2009 08:27 pm (UTC) (Link)

Re: Giannis M

Yep, it's in the databook (the title is "called game" actually, i had it mixed up). Is there any more appleseed out there, besides the 4 volumes and that short story?
That old stuff of his is really intriguing, i'd really like to see what that Neurohard world-building thing is all about.

It's Shirows tecnical ability with page layouts and drawing that keep me coming back--plus its all tied up in good comics feelings from when i was a teenager.

I've only read like 3 of Yasuhiko's books I'm thrilled there's so much. he's damn good.
I'll definatly have to get his Joan of arc stuff.

and yes, Marian has been told. I'm glad you dug beast.
There is much more to come.

I just want you to know that thanks to you and your stinky blog I just spent $50 on Ebay. After seeing your posts about all the great manga I've been missing over the years I just snagged every issue of Cobra, Black Magic, and Cyber 7, as well as the Appleseed books I was missing. I love how your blogs are pretty much just stream of thought ramblings filled with pictures and great art. Keep it up, because I'm going to need more reading suggestions when I'm done with all the stuff I just ordered.

nice, those are good books to get.
Have you read zooniverse yet?
I'm always pushing that.
From: (Anonymous) Date: December 10th, 2009 03:50 am (UTC) (Link)
I have one issue of Zooniverse that I found in a $1 box at a comic store after reading about it in one of your blogs. I probably wouldn't have given it a second glance if you hadn't talked about it. The art is great. I gotta track the rest of those down.

I also found the first volume of Kelly Green a while ago after you posted about it and really enjoyed it. I recently bought volumes 2 and 3 off Amazon, but they haven't shown up yet. Volume 4 seems impossible to get for less than like $100. Honestly, I'm not sure if it even exists, because I have yet to see a picture of the cover anywhere online.

The Dune images are so fascinating, I've been thinking about visualizations of the books quite a bit, and I think those are just un-complicated enough to suit it. I think its world would look that simple, and the book is about everyone's behavior and their brains -- let that stuff get wild, you know?
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: December 7th, 2009 04:51 am (UTC) (Link)
Yeah i always like digging up all the versions I can find of a book cover after i've read it.
It's always impressive when an artist captures it right with one image.

commenter #23 here... 23 is a good number. the drop assault on the coastal town, along with the part where there's subs combing the floor of AppleSeed Complete are kind of Shirow's peak to me.

Speaking of 'combing terrain,' how weirdly awesome would a Mel Brooks version of Shirow's ouevre be? Imagine all the JAP-y fembots!

I agree with all the stuff about Shirow having kinda lost his awesome since he went digital, but I also remember reading an interview clip somewhere where he said he's abandoned Appleseed b/c it no longer seemed realistically possible. Truly a Nerd call, but also truly an artist's call. Can't say I blame him, but it makes me sad. I think that may have been the point where he abandoned comics for film. Him and M-F'in Miller. WTF.

...Still, I'm really looking forward to the anime he and that director are working on; whatshisf#$"#in' name...Oshii. So Appropriate.. Man, japanese people really follow through on their names and the homophonic meanings. Maybe that sh!t'll get done before we die.

anyways, enough on Shirow. I was drawing a dumptruckbus earlier this week and then saw your ish on Da and was all like 'oh, ish...' but you know what? F&'%" IT, I'ma draw it anyways.

Keep rockin' dude.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: December 7th, 2009 04:57 am (UTC) (Link)

I cant even wrap my brain around Mel brooks / shirow.
although a blazing sadles appleseed mix would be something amazing.

Yeah, I understand the movies/ animation I cant like or agree with it....bleh. maybe something cool will come out of it.

I want to see your truck drawing when you finish it.
Im all about comics as a call and response anyway.

and you too.

Totally agree with you on Shirow. He'll have a shit load of detail about tactics and guns and how robots are made. Then he'll just throw in some naked chick for now reason.

I think Shirow was what got me originally into manga and comics for the first time. I saw a couple of pages of Appleseed. His move to CG just isn't working for me.

"Spider-Man is a menace to society while drinking his juice in the 'hood!"

I like your fancy-pants new coffee maker. It bears a striking resemblance to the Cuisinart coffee maker Meghan and I got after we got married. Does it have a timer? That's seriously, like, the greatest part about coffee makers now. You can have it so they brew your coffee before you're even awake. Good God DAMN, I love technology!

Also, I'm glad to hear you had a good birthday. Were those cheeseburgers homemade, or were they fast food? Not that I'm judging, it's just a whole hell of a lot easier to get and eat three cheeseburgers when you don't have to make them yourself.

Hey Brandon,
Great posts as always. The birthday strip is gem-- made me laugh like a nut. Hope you had a good one by the way. Marian's gaming strip is tits, too-- I can't believe what you guys whip up on your spare time. I've read Beast since we last spoke, and it's a stunningly beautiful, fully realized work. I can't believe it's her first graphic novel. but I do hope it earns her some serious attention amongst the comics intelligentsia. if she really did buzz her hair, it makes her even cooler.
That's all I have energy for tonight. Best to you both, and keep kicking out the jams..
