life inside the dome

Hey low,

That's from some old baseball manga. In it the main
guys get taken down to some undersea dome to play a game in a gi joe style
arena of sport aganst a team of uber men.
It's a rough game.

Anyway, Im sick as a dawg this week. I didn't draw for a couple days and realized that
I need it. It's a big part of my entertainment.
But mostly I've been sleeping and re reading old Conan and Appleseed.

I always come back to appleseed, It's brilliant and confusing. Shirow shows so much depth in
stuff --like he's taken on the mamoth task of trying to show how mankind would try to build a perfect society but even the main two characters relationship is kind of foggy.

I study this stuff like textbooks, I just finished book 2. one thing that occured to me this
time is Deunans feelings about race. If you'll indulge me in some nerd tennis:

So Deunans dad who never shows up but is half shown in a flashback and talked about a lot seems to hang out with lots of black people. Briereos is black and Deunans mom was a quarter and there's some other black dude shown in the flahback he's in, during Deunans weird childhood training excercizes. It might have to do with her dad spending time in Zimbabwe either way Deunan was raised around people of color--right?
right.

So in book 3 Deunan is talking to a black soviet woman who she just pulled a gun on
and she says "sorry most of the blacks I meet through my job are trying to kill me--makes me
a litle prejudiced" Which is a weird stetement because A-her boyfriend/partner is black and B-Shirow has never shown her going up against any black crimminals in Appleseed.

I mean I know her mom was killed by black supremacists in future san francisco and that's gotta give you some feelings. Maybe it's just shirow projecting.

Also I've been looking at this rumiko takahashi site
http://www.furinkan.com/
with a bunch of cool stuff on it.
There's an interview with her and Akira Toriyama
http://www.furinkan.com/takahashi/takahashi4.html

And a poster I liked for some event in Tokyo for her 30th anniversary creating manga
sweating panda

In the interview Toriyama mentions that he drew Dr Slump in an american style and
Dragon ball in a Chinese style. I mean I think he just means that one is straight up
cartoon and the other is Chinese mythology, But I always think of pacing as being
the main way that I think of different countries comics.

Like slowest to fastest
Japan then French American and British. not everyone of course im just genreralizing
so I can know when I build a vehicle powered off of world comics.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before I got sick I spent most of last week at James and Muggles place watching 2 seasons of 24 (seasons 5 and 6). two days a season, I think watching the murder rate in that show is the closest I have even been to enjoying any kind of televised sport.(I'm not counting curling that I like because it's insanity or womens speed skating cause it's like porn--and certainly not stripper dogeball which I count as a type of poetry)

we kept an ongoing tally of how many murders were caused by the main dude Jack Bauer
and by the world. Also all the Perimaters that got set up and how many goddamn Moles were in the show.
James wrote this out he was our murder stenographer:

while we watched that James was messing around with an idea for a Godzilla comic.
Here's his first couple pages.

James Stokoe's--WORLD WAR G------------------------------------------------

James is a comic book monster like that.
I seriously think he uses more gradients in a single panel than
I''ve done in my entire coloring life. but it works.

Here's a short thing I did as to tack onto the intro I wrote for the Side B anthology
http://www.poseurink.com/sideb/

That's supposed to be Marian but we dont have a cat (if we did im pretty sure this would happen) and all my music is on a
computah. But I drew her real desk and chair.
so there.

I've been listening to lots of jazz and some raymond chandler audio books.
I think they're read by the same dude that was Marlowe in the 70's long good bye
Such a rad movie. Here's a good 10 minutes of it:

That is awesome art by James. Why doesn't he update his LJ anymore? Is his story still in Popgun 3? I love his stuff!

That Side B Anthology sound great too, will have to look out for that one. that poor cat!

And hell yes on Elliot Gould as Philip Marlowe love. I didn't know he read some Chandler audiobooks! Must get those, The Long Goodbye is one of my favourite detective flicks. Great soundtrack too.

I'm not exactly sure why James lost interest in the internet. I dunno about Pop gun 3 either. I know he's got like 4 books in the bank about ready to come out.

Yes! Elliot Gould. It's weird to see him young in that movie.

I've been meaning to re-read APPLESEED (Hey, that rhymed!), but I keep getting dragged down by new stuff that comes my way. Right now, I'm finishing up THE CHRONICLES OF CONAN Vol.6, then it's on to MYSPACE DARKHORSE PRESENTS Vol.1 and THE WALKING DEAD Vol.8, both of which I picked up at NYCC. Maybe once I finish all that I'll be able to go through APPLESEED again.

On the subject of Deunans's comments about blacks, maybe what happened to her mom shocked her beliefs so badly that it changed her perspective. That can happen to people, where shit goes down that's so bad that it changes you down to the very core. And what happened to her mom is pretty damn bad.

Also, VIZ pisses me off sometimes with their whoremongering in terms of their manga publishing. I NEEDS MORE LUM AND BATTLE ANGEL, DAMMIT!

Ah yes the impenetrable boob vest.

I hope you've been thinking about the trilby keep what you kill cover.

Maybe her sitting in the necromonger throne with a comely wench holding onto her knee would be the best cover.

Man this is an entertaining post but there's so much going on it's hard to comment on it all.

That baseball manga is hysterical. I hope they have ubersurgeons to go with the uberhellion players. Even though she made the base, surely those are fouls... I don't know what you call that in baseball, but "unnecessary roughness" definately qualifies. Of course, when you are kidnapped and forced to play, that's not really baseball anymore... if that's what's happening.

About Appleseed... IMO we're seeing Shirow's limitations. He doesn't have a lot of them, and they don't have much to do with art or imagination... but relationships and dialog. He jumps to conclusions a lot. I don't think he considered Deunan's background quite as thoughtfully as you have. I think projection is about right.
Briareos in some ways is post human, so maybe he has left his ethnic background behind?

That Godzilla world war is incredible. That is one monster comic artist. I do like the bichrome coloring. it has kind of a 50s-60s reproduction era look that fits the story origin. I like that his General is not an idiot either. He's definately a warrior trying his damnedest.

I love your cat comic! I love that it's nearly silent, but the story comes out. Cat psychiatrist! I'm living with 4 critterz and I need his number.

Marlowe should have come clean with the cat instead of trying to trick him with the label.
Some other things... love his little initial swagger to the kitchen after waking up. What a weird double bouncing shuffle.
Dinkydoodles... snort.
The cardboard cat door that says El Porto Del Gato. Had to fullscreen the video and stop to read that.

The weird thing about the baseball manga is that in the next scene after they are maimed it shows them raining on a beach with just a couple bandages. Ubersurgon Is my guess.

I'm glad you figured out the Marlowe cat door, I wondered what that said.

cat = buddha machine!

raymond chandler is a serious good choice, btw.

I love the way the "O" in "POP" looks like a cat's anus. It's that attention to detail that is the mark of a master artist.

Also, I feel like I could stare at that second-last Godzilla panel forever. It's reaching deep down and tapping on the little part of me that wanted to be a Paleontologist when I was six, before I realized that hunting for dinosaur bones was boring as hell, and it's easier to just draw pictures, which is the fun part anyway.

I really enjoy the stuff in side b.
I think James has lost interest in the internet.
But the good news is that he's been making lots of comics.

Appleseed: I'd thought that most of the enemy forces that Deunan's dad trained dudes for were local warlord disputes and stuff, and were mostly black.
And maybe the pirates and local militia she and Bri fought in the ruins were african? Where exactly were the ruins where they were found?

Or maybe it was a comment on living in Olympus, with a mostly white bioroid base population?
Did the Databook cover it, maybe?

Thanks for mentioning our site (furinkan.com) and very glad you like it! You've got excellent and eclectic taste in manga with Shirow and Takahashi....and the weirdness that is Kouha! Saitama Regulus.
