The incarnation of what you do.

(the couch I slept on under David's piece.)

Dicecat is dead long live Dicecat.
It's the end of the place that me Corey and Jacob lived.
I imagine Corey and jacobs new capital hill spot will keep the name since the Dicecat painting will travel with them.
Plus its a good name for our loosely organized
but tight like brothers gang of dudes.

(That's Marian's drawing on the door and a sweet Pope poster to it's left.
and my old desk on the right.)

My lady went down and got all my earthly possesions for me. So now I'm neck deep in comics.
I've got a 2 foot stack I haven't read yet and everything from my formative comic book years.

I think I've reverted back to how I lived when I was 15. Maybe this is my natural state. reading comics all day and drawing all night with breaks for walks and Marian.

I just read the first 14 issues of Venus wars.
Yoshikazu Yasuhirko makes this shit look easy.
You can tell in some panels how fast he's inking,
where the lines barely connect. But all the storytelling is spot on.

I was reading about how he was trained by Tezuka. Seems like Tezuka was
that rare kind of artist who rubbed off on other artists.

Here's a self portrait and a photo of him--he really got his hair right.

I always amazed looking at the tiny little studios the manga dudes work in.
I guess I'm just used to moving around a lot.
I've got 3 spots I draw in in this house.

Another dude that worked under Tezuka, I'm getting into again is
Hisashi Sakaguchi.
I've been reading what issues I can find of his book Version.
I don't even know if they finished translating it or if he died
before it was done. (1946-1995)

I think this book isn't better known partly due to the shit covers Dark horse put on it when it came out in english.

Reading these dudes makes me feel like the ceiling of what can be done and how good you can get is Sooo high.

And here's this Appleseed scene that I was always impressed by.
See how they're talking on the grass and then he shows the ice cream cart
without them.
Then Deunan starts to get up from the grass and then without breaking the line of conversation they're eating Ice cream.

And it tottally works.
Shirow is on some comic book science.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyway, my own stuff is going good.
I'm drawing a scene with lots of swords and action.
Here's that 2 page spread from the next Multiple warheds that I mentioned last time. That's Big Blue Nura on the bike.

That dosen't spoil the exciting stuff.
I'm having fucking FUN with this book.

at the same time Marian is cranking out some amazing elephanmen pages.
6 pages into her second issue. All full 11 by 17 marker.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

And on the reverting to my 15 year old self kick
I spent way too much of today looking at this Dirty pair site:
http://www.japantale.com/dp/images/images.htm

'Cause lovely angels do dirty work or some shit.
I had a good dirty pair poster on my wall in those days.

94 feels like it was a week ago.
I never fully understood the concept of pogs.

About that Multiple Warheads page : HOLY SHIT ! That's so excellent !!

About that other manga stuff : I've got to look into these authors. The only books we got in France from Hisashi Sakaguchi were his "Ikkyu" story of a buddhist monk... From Yoshikazu Yasuhirko we have some Gundam and a story about Jesus ? I'll have to see what I can find in english...

But seriously that MW page blew my mind

Also I've only read a few Appleseed books, and I didn't know Briareos could eat ice cream. I didn't even know he had a mouth. (I spent a great deal of time wondering if he had a penis, though)
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 27th, 2008 08:26 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm glad you like the page.

I believe Briareos has a penis.
There's some appleseed data book that talks about it.
I think he's a black Russian that got caught In an explosion
so he's only part machine.

Now I gotta dig up Ikkyu.

that Multiple Warheads page is awesome. Holy shit, that beast with the city on his back is awesome. reminds me a bit of Shadow of the Colossus, my favourite PS2 game.

Anyway, if that's your old desk, what do you use as a desk now? I'm reconsidering the order I placed for a drawing table since the delivery is taking just too fucking long, and I'm looking for tips on brands and such.
chamonkee From: chamonkee Date: September 27th, 2008 08:25 am (UTC) (Link)
wow I almost had a small heartattack as i scrolled down to see that spread for multiple warheads. Plus I was reading the small comics Toriyama did (that appear between chapters of Dr Slump) about how he makes comics and have to agree on how crazy small their workspaces are. Especially as Toriyama shared his with and assistant too.

Long live Dicecat. So Dicecatty. I'll miss those concrete steps. I always thought I was going to rush down them and fall and die.

Your page looks sweet all coloured.

Y'know, when you mentioned this spread before I imagined something really complex. I'm amazed at how much negative space you've got there. I mean, that's a pretty complex concept to pull off, but you make it look so damn simple.

And yes, Aqua knight is pretty brilliant.

Dicecat never cracked a sweat when he rolled his last. Snake Eyes. Dicecat knew the score. With that he vanished into the urban twilight leaving his Ninja crew to protect the world from the approaching darkness...

Man, your posts really get me pumped. The Eighties were so full of this (The 90s in Japan also counts as 80s) awesome work. That Venus wars page , yeah man that inking.. I can imagine him just whippin' this stuff out. THE WILL OF TEZUKA LIVES ON...

Warheads is looking good. WALKING MANSION. Is that a crashed UFO on the mountain?...

ultrastefan From: ultrastefan Date: September 27th, 2008 02:53 pm (UTC) (Link)
Will have to check out a few of these, that Venus one too. Good stuff. Your MW page is awesome, too; comic kids in the future will make LJ posts showcasing your art, just as you showcase the art of other great artists.

You should have a TV show talking about comics and the comics thug life. It would convert everyone to the inked page.
tony_cliff From: tony_cliff Date: September 27th, 2008 03:07 pm (UTC) (Link)
i like your posts a lot. so educational! man, you must really like comics. ALSO, nice, big images. keep up the awesome work.

the Yasuhirko pages confused me cause I started reading them right-to-left, and I thought "this is effing confusing". eventually i figured it out. that was a rough half-an-hour though.

nervousystem From: nervousystem Date: September 27th, 2008 03:07 pm (UTC) (Link)
I love these posts about manga. Between you and then Shaennon's Overlooked Manga Festival, it just makes a person wanna draw some comics.
apeville From: apeville Date: September 27th, 2008 05:09 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yasuhiko amazes me. I only read a few issues of Venus Wars, but he also did the Gundam Origin series, which was again full of seemingly unfinished lines that actually didn't need to be finished.

Sakaguchi's art looks a lot like Otomo's. Not that his is a bad thing. They both have a similar way of inking - I wonder if Otomo was a disciple of Sakaguchi?

I think the Shirow piece works because it leaves a sufficiently big hole in the flow of time in the page, and at no point prior to them having ice-cream do you see them moving about. It's clever. He's one of those kinds of artists who can put in a panel that doesn't actually feature any of the primary characters for the scene, and not have it ruin the flow. Masterful! :P

when you get our age, you are faced with a crossroads...act 15, or act your age, based on the accepted social ideals of said age.

the best answer is always to act 15.
paulsakoff From: paulsakoff Date: September 27th, 2008 11:08 pm (UTC) (Link)
i'm 15, and thats pretty much all i'm doing....
drawing, sleeping, going to school, reading comics, drawing....

Re: DP Heathen

I never even made it to flash.
Didn't it come out when there was all kinds of crappy anime remakes? Bubblegum crash ect. That kept me away
Maybe it is awesome.

cleaning out some stuff to give goodwill last week, i found a few dirty pair vhs tapes. maybe some little kid will pick 'em up for like, a buck and feel his life is renewed or something.

makes me wanna watch my project a-ko dvds.

i still lust after your city designs hardcore. you should know i pull out your books along with the rest of the stuff i usually pull out when i'm trying to pin down a city for a story. been spending almost a month city-building now. i love it.
harveyjames From: harveyjames Date: September 28th, 2008 07:07 am (UTC) (Link)
Oh wow, all great stuff. Thanks for pointing out that thing about the ice creams! I'd never have noticed that myself, but it's brilliant. These posts are like gold dust to me.
westival From: westival Date: September 28th, 2008 07:36 pm (UTC) (Link)
Your livejournal posts are full of gold. I never have much to say as far as comments go, but I always end up seeking out things you recommend. In fact it's kind of financially draining :)

...like a QVC channel for comics...
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 29th, 2008 03:41 am (UTC) (Link)
cool thank you.
What stuff have you managed to track down?
yes_sammyrules From: yes_sammyrules Date: September 29th, 2008 01:02 am (UTC) (Link)
i just got back from b-more comiccon and it'd been cool if you were there. i got this bootleg of the bucky ohare cartoon and it's pretty cool so far, i didn't remember a lot of it. i also got this old wizard from 93 and that shit is silly because the best selling comic books in the 90's weren't marvel or dc and a lot of the art was terrible.

i got these two porno mangas called "bombshell boobies" and the other one was "la blue girl, book one: destiny" and they made me think of you.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 29th, 2008 03:39 am (UTC) (Link)
I wish I was there.

I only remember the Bucky O hare comix.
The 90's was a dank time for top selling comix.
For some reason I used to read wizard but none of the books they pushed. What was selling back then Ash or evil ernie or some shit?

Secret plot deep was always my porno manga of choice even though he draws girls like giant ogres. I wonder what the origonal title of bombshell boobies in japan was?

I'm adding you to my LJ friends list. Hope that's cool by you. Stumbled upon your work over at DevArt - fab stuff.
