I sink into the paper like I was ink. - Brandon Graham
I sink into the paper like I was ink.

It's been a good week, I've just been drawing with some breaks for tetris and walks. Marian has achevied some disgustingly high level of badassery in the video game she's playing. I think she's already running the theives guild --Immpressive.

One of my favorite side effects of doing comic books is how much shit you have to learn to keep writing. Like this week I was comming up with some pastry puns and I found out that the Molotov in Molotov coctail was a real dude a Russian politician, Vyacheslav Molotov. Reminds me how my pal David told me that chauvinism was named after a Nicolas Chauvin and what an asshat you'd have to be to get that named after you. Personally all I've got is that time machine and those crackers.

Someone started a list of favorite top 12 comics. And I threw out 12. I rolled it around in my brain for a week and came up with the 12 most important books to me.

i mean it's mostly the creators of the books that I'm thinking of.
Idealy the goal is to do books as good as these.

Anyway what about you dudes?

Speaking of comics, I picked up the Wolverine Saudade book that a couple of french dudes did for marvel.
I got it after reading this review.
The art is impressive. I dunno if it's the translation or what but Wolverine keeps saying shit like
hoser and canuckehead. Maybe he says that shit all the time but it really cuts down any belief that he might be
a badass.

The thing that bugs me-- there's this HUGE MATURE CONTENT thing on the cover, inside the book people are getting shot in the face and dudes are shitting themselves as they die but  when Logan loses his clothes--
he's got some crotch shadow or foreground object blocking it.  And it's not like I'm dieing to see what his dick looks like (uncircumzised -because of the healingfactor) but why are people so into getting wolverine naked if you're just going to pull some cheese dick crotch shadow shit.

He is seriously the only male character I can think of that they go out of the way to get naked.(aside from naked justice of course)
Marvel is so scared of dick. And that is why they'll never let James Stokoe draw Galactus.

Also i ran into a site with a grip of Otomo art.
He's so good.

i should do a 12 set of novels for me, that'd make a lot more sense.

Heh, heh, this top twelve thing is gonna go around like wildfire. I've ponderd my top tens many times.

You have a way of pulling out shit I thought was my own private treasure- like Floro Dery or obscure Otomo art. I'm afraid to post that kind of stuff 'cause I know it'll outshine my own work- you don't seem to have that problem- your stuff's good, no argument.

Seriously track some Bode down.
He's really one of the best dudes to ever make comics.

royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 16th, 2008 07:47 am (UTC) (Link)

Now that we're movin, I'm goin thru my comix, constructing a "core equilibrium" of the main comics that inspire me, for easy access.

It's pretty much all late 90's early 00's Pope. When I really think about it, I come to the conclusion "all I need is Pope". It's really perfect comics to me.

I'm talkin THB 6, Heavy Liquid, One-Trick, etc.

Anyway, so, #1 Pope

And a bunch of manga. Dragon Ball / Z, Naruto, Berserk, Ranma 1/2, No. 5, Black & White... nerf nerf

I realized today that my all time favorite movies are usually COP DRAMAS. are there any good COP COMICS for fuck's sake? I guess Sin City... mmm... i dunno.
From: parkas_4_kids Date: September 16th, 2008 10:44 am (UTC) (Link)
DUDE...did you see Narc? GREAT cop drama flick. Quite possibly one of my favorites. Very dark & gritty.

Check it out.

Pope, Toriyama, good-Baker, Toriyama, Moebius, Pini, Bodé... that's most of my list right there. The Appleseed cover you included was the first manga trade I ever bought, and is still as awesome to this day.

Otomo's work seems heavily influenced by European art, just merged with the technical drawing skill common in Japan... a neat combination to have, really :)
From: fehed Date: September 16th, 2008 08:56 am (UTC) (Link)
I don't think I have 12 comics that inspire me. I got 12 movies that inspire me. Does that count? ... probably not. Hmm.. needs thinking about. That comic party illustration is awesome by the way :)
bougieman From: bougieman Date: September 16th, 2008 09:45 am (UTC) (Link)
incredible picks for your top 12. The only two that I wouldn't second as being totally brilliant are Matt Howarth and Wendy Pini.

I've never been able to even get through one of Howarth's comics, and I think there is a reason ElfQuest went from being the top selling independant comic in the industry to being almost totally forgotten by all but it's biggest fans from back in the day.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 16th, 2008 04:44 pm (UTC) (Link)
I think elfquest was brought down by the later books after the first 4. I mean dragon ball too.

I'd be interested to see you do a list like this.
With your head as deep in comics as it is.
From: parkas_4_kids Date: September 16th, 2008 10:49 am (UTC) (Link)
I was about to flip out and say, "WHAT?! NO CONAN?!" But you left the comment about creators, and it all made sense.

My Top 12 needs to be re-thought. That list I threw up in devART was rushed, incomplete; I'll need to go through all my comics once I move them into my new house before I can create the ultimate Top 12.

And I think the reason Marvel doesn't like dicks showing up in their books is 'cause so many of their books suck huge dick, and they're afraid their readers will go into dick overload.
harveyjames From: harveyjames Date: September 16th, 2008 11:02 am (UTC) (Link)
Fuck, you really struck gold with that Otomo website. Otomo is my very favorite!

As for my top 12... I need to roll this around in my brain for a week too, but Tin-tin would be in there, Peanuts, Dragon Ball, Manara, Chris Ware, Akira, Bone, Valerian... that's not a hell of an exciting list, I'll grant you.
harveyjames From: harveyjames Date: September 16th, 2008 11:28 am (UTC) (Link)
Also I once heard a dude describe Eric B and Rakim as 'anti-bling-bling'. I have their album on 12". Have you seen it? The sleeve just shows them wearing TONS of gold. the background is dollar bills. It's CALLED Paid in Full. And the gold's been drawn on with a motherfucking SPECIAL GOLD PEN so it appears to shine when you wiggle the record sleeve.

Yeah, look

royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 16th, 2008 04:56 pm (UTC) (Link)
Such a dumb cover for such a rad album.
Eric B looks so awkward--his face is like his mother dressed him.

I understand the need to want to seperate that from the bad rap pop. But I think it's just better. --the real gold's inside.

Giant-size THB by Paul Pope. So glad I have that one.

pff, my top 12... that's difficult picking. It'd have to include The Incal, some Corto Maltese, some Love and Rockets (early Gilbert, later Jaime), Nausicaä, some Corben, some Cosey... I'll come back to this.

I picked up Bode's Erotica Vol. 2 a few weeks back at a flea market for five bucks!! It rules, his stuff is amazing, I wonder where he is now.

I've been thinking about getting into Elfquest and now I'll start hunting them down for sure, some of these Baltimore comic stores are crawling with this stuff.

Wolverine's dong is uncut without a doubt, and it's shaped just like him, short and wide with lots of hair.

Are you going to Baltimore Comiccon or SPX this coming year?
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 16th, 2008 05:39 pm (UTC) (Link)
Unfortunatly Bode died young (in '75.)
But he did a shitload of amazing stuff before he went.

Definaty dig up some elfquest, once you get past the nerd wall of it being about elves and trolls it's really amazing.

I don't know what cons I'm going to yet. I really want to see SPX soon. Mostly I'm layting low until I get some more books out. soooon.

Vyacheslav Molotov

Yeah, I like your educational posts, Brandon. What is that second one of the top there?

royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 16th, 2008 07:42 pm (UTC) (Link)

Re: Vyacheslav Molotov

It's one of the giant Paul Pope THB books.

Somebody told me once that boy cats have little claws on their penises, and Wolverine is a little bit like a cat, so your diagram might be closer than you think. I think it works out.

royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 16th, 2008 10:55 pm (UTC) (Link)
woah barbed penis.
maybe it's adamantium.
tormentedartist From: tormentedartist Date: September 16th, 2008 10:05 pm (UTC) (Link)
Wolverine wouldn't have foreskin if he were circumcised as a child. Because most mutants develop their powers later in life. But I don't know, only Chris Claremont knows that answer to that. I can only guess.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 16th, 2008 10:56 pm (UTC) (Link)
I bet Claremont has a safe with nothing but a scrap of paper inside with the awnser to that question.
johnchrist From: johnchrist Date: September 16th, 2008 10:20 pm (UTC) (Link)
Heh, "uncircumsized because of his healing factor" reminds me of a question I posed about the cheerleader character from the show 'Heroes,' if she is still a virgin when she gets her healing powers then would that mean that she'll be a virgin (physically) forever? I bet sex would really suck if that were the case.
katimazie From: katimazie Date: September 16th, 2008 11:34 pm (UTC) (Link)
Molotov was a real guy? Frigging sweet.

What's the second comic you've got listed there? The art is really catching my eye.

It's always bugged me how people will play elaborate games of hide-the-penis rather than give a goddamn full-frontal of a guy. Come on, if you're drawing a naked guy waking around you should at least own up to the fact he has genitals once or twice instead of using elaborate shadow effects and random objects to hide 'em.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 17th, 2008 02:41 am (UTC) (Link)
That second comic is one of the old giant THB books by Paul Pope. His late 90's stuff was amazing.

I'm glad you're an enemy of the crotch shadow.

PS You should definitely come out for SPX. We can totally offer you a place to stay and rides n junk.

for serious

I'm so into your blog.
Let me know if you dudes ever want some free drawing.

I'll probly have to make the 2009 SPX. Since I feel like a
fool showing my face without any new books.

Appleseed over any other Shirow? Is that because it was the best of his early work? Black Magic is pretty bad, and Dominion is okay. I'll post my 12 sometime, but you can bet it's Ghost in the Shell or Orion for me (you know, before he started using computers to make awful comics).
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 17th, 2008 02:45 am (UTC) (Link)
I'd be very interested to see your 12.

I like Appleseed so much more than any other shirow stuff.
Orion is pretty amazing as well. Ghost in the shell feels like appleseed with everything I like taken out of it.

that otomo cover reminds me of mad max. and damn is that helmet shiny.
royalboiler From: royalboiler Date: September 17th, 2008 05:17 pm (UTC) (Link)
aren't we beyond thunder dome?

I watched one of the early mad max movies recently and was amazed at how much the fist ofthe north star manga took from it.
